Framed Bikes bring SRAM eTap to the Rodez for one heck of a deal

Electronic shifting has been around for a while now, and bikes that come with it often carry a *cough* decent price tag. Framed Bikes is changing that standard by putting SRAM’s eTap on rollback with the Rodez. What makes their road bike stand out from other carbon bikes, with similar groupsets, is its price tag. Coming from the world of fat bikes, maybe they’re just not used to how much these things usually go for…

Earlier this year, Framed bundled SRAM’s Rival group into the Rodez, a mid-level carbon road bike for $1,700. Now, they’ve upped the ante by offering the same frame, this time with a SRAM Red eTap drivetrain for just $3,299. Adding to the value are tubeless ready PUB carbon wheels, a high modulus carbon frame/fork, and TRP HY/RD (cable ⇒ hydraulic) disc brakes. We’re guessing the use of the mechanical SRAM eTap group matched with the HY/RD brakes might be one of the areas Framed was able to save on the build costs. The full SRAM Red eTap drivetrain includes a 52/36 tooth crank and an 11-26 11-speed cassette.

Additional specs include:

Frame:  Framed High Modulus Carbon Fiber frame 135mm QR. Integrated headset, internal cable and housing routing
Fork:  Framed High Modulus Carbon Fiber fork 100mm QR
Headset:  FSA Orbit C-40 Integrated
Rotors:  TRP 140mm front and rear
Handlebars:  Framed Lightweight Alloy 6061, Compact Drop
Bar Stem:  Framed Aluminum 100mm Threadless, 6 degree rise, 4 bolt
Saddle:  Selle Italia X1 Flow
Seat Post:  Framed Lightweight Aluminum Alloy 400mm x 31.6mm
Front Hub:  DT Swiss 240S, IS 28 hole, 100mm QR
Rear Hub:  DT Swiss 240S 11 speed, 28 hole, 135mm QR
Rims:  PUB Carbon 700RD-38-AS-28
Tires:  Maxxis RE-Fuse 700x25c 120 TPI Folding Bead

Taking all the parts into consideration, the $3,300 price tag is a fairly aggressive offer. It’s only available in 52, 54, and 57cm frames, though, so here’s hoping it fits.

This cracks me up. Are we really pretending that we don’t understand how Framed can have an eTap equipped bike that’s so much less than a Trek or Specialized?

So what. Not everybody is willing to pay the ‘hype’ markup from Trek or Specialized or any other big brand.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Does it come with tweezers to help with the carbon splinters?

So Framed is owned by The House. The huge online snowboard site. So I can see them being able to offer this bike at probably a break even price just to get consumers to buy.

I always find it funny that people are willing to buy something like an expensive bike online without even having the ability to take it for a test ride first.

You are basically buying a parts package and a frame the I am sure was some open mold frame from China thrown in.

I am not a big fan of Specialized or Trek but at least you know what you are getting.

As far as buying a bike without the test ride, those buying custom frames are taking that leap of faith all the time, and they are paying a lot more than this. And if the frame is crap, strip the parts and sell frame on ebay. Something that bikes Direct customers have been doing for years. Your still getting a complete build kit with eTap for a deal.

Do bikes direct customers ever actually get any good money for their frames on ebay?

how well is the front 140mm rotor going to work when it barely touches the bottom of the caliper meant for 160mm….

Allow me to defend Framed a bit from the bike snobs.

Here in MN, where Framed is headquartered, we have a LOT people that choose Framed bikes due to their cost and value. They seem to be pretty happy with their bikes. I know people that have Framed carbon and aluminum fat bikes with zero issues. These bikes are not garage queens either, they are getting ridden regularly.

You can poopah Framed because they are a “budget” brand, but you can’t poopah them for filling a niche. Framed is providing decent, pretty good even, bikes at more blue collar prices.

I live in Minnesota as well, and have nothing against Framed. But saying that “a LOT” of people here are choosing their bikes is a bit of an overstatement.

Also, when your selling point is they are “pretty good even”, I think that says a lot.

My critical comment earlier was directed at the way the article was written though, as if it was some big mystery as to how Framed could sell a bike at this cost with this spec.

BikesDirect has a very nice titanium eTap build for the same price.

What’s wrong with Framed or Bikes Direct – given that it’s just a handful of factories producing for most well recognized brands?
As for open mold – so what? This is a different price category (value category).
I think it’s great that there are options for those that wants the latest technology, in this case SRAM etap, and don’t necessarily care what sticker their frame carries.
Options are good. Getting value is great. You choose, just don’t judge others for going with a different choice.
As for buying over the Internet, why not? The quality of service that I’ve seen in many LBS makes me easily consider buying a bike online after some research and user reviews of frames, bikes, on-line retailers, etc.
The only thing that makes me sad is to see so many people holding a negative view (opinion) on something that they are not familiar with just because it’s different.

specialized and trek – nearly the most overpriced bikes by a mile. Also – building some bikes and Apple/Sony type of things into their bikes that forces you to buy their wheels, their seatposts.

Specialized has lost touch (as well as their dealers) of who their customer actually is and what they want to buy and are able to afford to buy.

So – this bike is something I would certainly consider over those two “Bose” of bike companies.
KIA, & Hyundai, are filling this same niche in the car market.

Unless the branded S and T stores don’t start paying more attention to their customer needs, they are going to be out of biz soon.
How about a bicycle shop that sells, just bikes like this? or bikes direct bikes? or just bikes in the 3k market? with the best customer service you ever had? Would you go? and Go back?

My open mold frame has about 6000 km this year so far, including a couple of gravel road races. I can appreciate people wanting to believe that there is an advantage to a brand named bike when they have paid a premium, but it is really just a belief. I am assuming that Framed offers a warranty that is just as good as any of the brand names so this seems like a zero risk proposition.
