Heller Bloodhound finds new Trail fat bike configuration

Heller is relatively new to the fat bike world, but they’re already gaining a lot of traction. A lot of that has to do with the fact that they are associated with QBP, but it also probably has something to do with the price of their bikes. Thanks to the open mold nature of their frames, Heller provides high end carbon bikes to dealers that they can sell at impressive prices. And now that the ball is rolling, there is a new more aggressive spec for their Bloodhound fat bike that will help you take to the trail…

Called the Bloodhound Trail, the carbon frame includes a small update which is probably critical for those who want a “trail” fat bike. That of course would be the addition of internal dropper routing to go along with the current full housing internal cable routing. Built to accept 4.5″ tires on 80mm rims with a 197 x 12mm rear end and 120mm threaded bottom bracket, the Trail version sees the addition of a 100mm RockShox Bluto to help tame the front end.

Other trail worthy upgrades include a SRAM NX/GX 1×11 drivetrain, SRAM Level brakes with 180/160mm rotors, and a switch to Surly OBD tubeless ready rims with Kenda Juggernaut 26 x 4.5″ tires. All told, the upgrades work out to a $2599 price tag and a claimed weight of 31 lbs 14 0z (14.46kg) for a complete medium build.

Can someone clarify what “open mold” means? Thanks. I’ve heard it used a few different ways and could use a little clarity.

@ roger – open mold is a carbon frame open to any buyer versus custom tooling paid for by a brand so no one else can use it. Open mold is no tooling charge so the unit cost is lower but not unique to your brand. Some times one mold is used by one brand per market (USA, Asia, South America, Europe, etc…). This would be exclusive per country and tooling charge is equally paid by brands in each country.

You would think if this is such a universal “open mold”, they would have maximized usage of the frame by allowing full sized 4.8″ tires. A miss in my opinion.

You missed the point. Open mold= you get what they already make. Not every detail you want.

A friend was riding one of these last winter with Minion FBR front on rear on clownshoes. Just like any other frame the size tire that fits depends on the brand.

Same weight as the aluminum bikes direct fat bike that fits 4.8″ tires and is only 900.00

ascarlarkinyar – you’re missing the point if all you’re worried about is weight – especially with a fat bike. Sure, an alloy Bikes Direct cheapo frame and spotty build might weigh the same or less. But you’re basically paying for a Bluto, an X7 ten speed kit and an O.K. aluminum frame from KHS’ factory in China. But after looking closely at the specs – non tubeless wheels, near useless tires, bb7 brakes and crap cockpit parts I’d roll with something else with better geometry and the ability to easily go tubeless. But, hey, you get what you pay for. I’ve ridden the crap out of a Shagamaw, including some light FR stuff and the frame felt stiff but never complained.

Bredan,
these are both entry level bikes. For the same price you can upgrade the bikes direct with your own custom parts and have a super bike. You can buy a Chinese carbon frame for cheap and put the rest of the money into parts making a super bike. This bike is too expensive for the weight and what you can already get online.
weight is the enemy on any bike. Especially an already heavy bike like a fat one. For every 10 pounds the riding experience goes down until you reach the point od non enjoyment.

I start with light weight bikes and add food, clothes, tools, etc. Bikes get heavy quickly. Wake up buddy.
