Just back at Sea Otter we were introduced to a pair of new 26+ hardtails from Jamis  – the Dragonfly & Eden – geared towards giving women some wide Plus-sized tire love. But apparently Jamis had received such positive and immediate feedback from both customers and dealers that they have expanded a lot on those new hardtails and even brought the smaller 26+ wheels over to the bikes for men. Now all of the steel Dragonslayers and alloy Komodos get Plus-sized rubber with the option of either 26″+ or 27.5″+ hoops. Check out the spec and pricing on the full family, including the women’s bikes after the break…

The Dragon family are the Reynolds 520 steel hardtails and build on the success of Jamis’ first 27.5+ Dragonslayer this past year. The bike will be offered in 3 version now and two specs for each. All of the bikes in the series feature adjustable sliding dropouts with a 15mm of adjustment, thru-axles front (15mm) and rear (12mm), rear rack mounts & multiple cargo/bottle braze-ons  for bikepacking, plus oversize 44mm head tubes, Boost spacing, and internal dropper post routing.

The Pro bikes – Dragonslayer Pro 27.5+, Dragonslayer Pro 26+, Dragonfly Pro 26+ – will all sell for the same $2500 price, equipped with Fox Rhythm 34 Float forks. They get a 1x Shimano SLX drivetrain, SLX brakes, and wheels built with WTB’s Scrapper i40 tubeless rims.

The Sport models will all go for $1400 – Dragonslayer Sport 27.5+, Dragonslayer Sport 26+, Dragonfly Sport 26+. These more affordable bikes go with a Rock Shox Recon Silver RL fork and get a SRAM NX1 setup, paired with Shimano hydraulic brakes, and wheels with the same WTB i40 rims.

Pairing to the steel Dragons are the aluminum versions of the bikes in the Komodo and Edens. They get essentially all of the same tech with triple butted 6061 aluminum frames. Again the bikes get two spec levels, two wheel sizes for the men’s Komodo, and one for the women’s Eden.

The Expert spec bikes will all sell for $1700 with the Rock Shox Recon Silver RL fork – Komodo Expert 27.5+, Komodo Expert 26+, Eden Expert 26+. These bikes also get the same SRAM NX1 setup as the Dragon Sports, this time with Deore disc brakes and the same WTB i40 rims.

The Sport models sell for $1000 – Komodo Sport 27.5+, Komodo Sport 26+, Eden Sport 26+. These lowest priced bikes get either the 26+ RST Alpha TNL, or the 27.5+SR Suntour XCR 32 LOR forks. Spec wise they then get Deore 2×10 drivetrains and Tektro hydraulic brakes, but still the same WTB i40 rims.

These new 2017 Jamis Plus hardtails are expected to be in stock from the end of September, with all the new 2017 bikes live ob their website from September.

I will attest to the awesomeness of plus width wheels. I will also attest that they take every bad characteristic of a 29″ wheel and make it worse. It took me less than a week on 27.5+ wheels to start researching 26+. I’m already sold.

Can you elaborate? Considering a ‘fun’ 27.5+ to replace my ‘fun-ish’ 29er HT

Yeah, I’m not sure what he is talking about. 27.5+ does not feel like a 29. The only bad characteristic I find is that makes me kind of lazy picking a line.

Lazy lines are my biggest complaint. I demoed a 650+ and felt like I lost a lot of pumping ability and gained a lot of stand on the pedals and roll over stuff with no communication through the pedals and bars. Pretty boring IMO. I had a floating over the trail feel because the lugs didn’t want to dig into anything. I could push off the lugs with exagerated body english but that resulted in casing roll. If a mountain bike had a volume dial, 27+ would be a mute button. Pretty boring. No need to demo a 26+, I did that 10 years ago. Being lighter only changes so much.

Not sure what you are talking about. I’m pretty stocked about my 29+ setup. To be honest the only downside is I sometimes feels like cheating.

Sweet! I’m pretty stoked for 26+ too! Frames are still compatible with regular 27.5 is also a huge plus (no pun intended)

So when are the 26+ tires available? My Dirt Wizards are pretty heavy, I want options.

Only problem with Jamis is their customer support or the lack of such.

They shouldn’t have killed the Reynolds 853 version of this bike. I own a 2014 Dragon pro, but would not put this on my list when considering a new bike.

Call me back when they have a 853 frame equipped with Shimano XT or Sram Eagle.
