Wider tires no doubt have taken today’s road bike market by storm. Improved contact points, cornering, rollover, and potentially aerodynamics. Fulcrum’s new Racing Zero Competizione is said to offer a rim width that improves aerodynamics of 25-28mm tires, plus all the comfort and other expected benefits.

Roll past the break to see what makes them race ready…

Alongside Fulcrum’s recent release of the Speed T carbon tubular, and Speed 40 clincher comes the Racing Zero Competizione. They’re built with a C17 rim which provides a wider 23mm width compared to the C15 which features a 20.3mm width (on other Racing Zero models). Having the larger rim profile allows for 25-28mm tires to fit with flatter side walls which they claim leads to less drag. The rim also features Fulcrum’s MoMag system’s solid upper bridge – standard spoke nipples are installed through the valve hole, and directed by a magnet to the appropriate position.

Both front and rear wheels are constructed with aluminum rims, and aerodynamic spokes. The rear wheel is laced with Fulcrum’s 2:1 system that splits 21 spokes into 14 on the drive side, and 7 on the opposite. The 2:1 system is said to reduce rim torsion under accelerating power.

The hubs get CULT ceramic bearings that claim to spin up to nine times smoother  compared to standard steel bearings. Furthermore, an elongated drive side aluminum hub flange provides a stiff junction between the hub and spokes for increased stiffness. The Racing Zero Competizione weighs in at 1510 grams a set, and prices coming soon.

So is that an internal width of 17mm? The internal width seems like the more important measurement.

That wheel looks a LOT like the Ksyrium ES from about 8 years back: 1 red spoke, red hub flanges and a carbon hub body. Is that the kind of thing Mavic could sue them over?

Uh, no. There’s no patents involved in anything you mention. Go sue your mom!

Will they come in the 2-way fit also?

The description of these wheels sound exactly like the specs of my Fulcrum’s Rancing Zero Carbon, apart from the rim material of course. They spin quickly and roll nice, it’s awesome. I’ve been looking for a similar set of wheels in aluminum for the rainy days and this might just be it. Kudos Campy!
