Moots Cycles is calling out to help one of the founding fathers of the mountain bike, Charlie Cunningham. Charlie was involved in a bad cycling accident this past August requiring an extensive hospital stay and future modifications to his home for wheelchair access during his recovery.

Please ride past the break to find out what Charlie did for us and how you can return the favor by snagging one of a few of Moots’ Ti Sticks or just tossing a 6-pack’s worth of change his way…..

Charlie-600x400

If you don’t know who Charlie Cunningham is, you should. Charlie one of mountain biking’s most important innovators, and wife Jacquie Phelan, an early advocate for women’s cycling, are both honorable inductees into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. To understand a little about Charlie, does your bike have a sloping top tube? 135mm zero-dish wheel? Is it a heat-treated aluminum frame? Have anything from WTB (Wilderness Trail Bikes)? Charlie brought all of these to us and much more.

Back in 2013 when Colorado suffered devastating floods, Moots came forward to help by selling their badass version of a cowbell. They’re stepping up once again to raise funds to help Charlie’s in his time of need. To purchase one of the limited number of Ti Sticks, (just in time for 2016 CX Nationals in Asheville, NC in January), visit Moots’ Charlie Cunningham Benefit page. The Ti Sticks are $125 each and after all are sold,

UPDATE: Moots is sold out of the Ti Sticks, but you can still give on his go fund me page, and we will still donate $1 for every awesome comment!

Moots will give is giving 100% of the $4,000 raised to Charlie! You can also give as little or as much as you want on the Go Fund Me page set up by Charlie and Jacquie’s long time friend Caroline James, who writes:

In early August, 2015, Charlie Cunningham, bicycle builder, inventor and all around amazing person, fell off his bike and sustained several serious injuries. Charlie suffered broken bones, bruises, and trauma to his head. At the time, he didn’t feel his head injury was significant. Unfortunately, six weeks later, the head injury manifested into a subdural hematoma, a life threatening condition that resulted in emergency brain surgery.

Currently, Charlie is in the hospital, recovering. His condition is stable, semi-conscious, but he cannot walk, talk or safely swallow food yet. He is making very slow steps to regain very basic tasks. The road to recovery is going to be long and involve many specialists to help him get back to his former self. Charlie’s wife Jacquie Phelan, racer and ladies cycling advocate, is teaching him basic speech, in tandem with his speech/swallow therapists. Their home will need modifications to allow him to live there. It is unknown how long he will be wheelchair bound. Your donations will help to offset the costs of his rehabilitation and the “ramping up” of his home (Offhand Manor). Thank you for your generosity.

100% of all sales and donations go straight to Charlie.

Had a grease guard headset back in the 90’s, still be riding it ‘cept it was threaded. A true pioneer with no need for wealth or fame, I’ve enjoyed many of his contributions to our industry. Get well Charlie.

I really hope for the best for Charlie, I was always a WTB fan back in the day. But I don’t know that I ever rode a bike with a 135 mm zero dish rear wheel.

Get well Charlie, take good care of him Jacquie (Alice B Toeclips). Charlie and Jacquie gave me directions back to Fairfax once and pointed out a cool little singletrack to get there from a small town, “maybe Ross”. I was a bit lost on some roads after riding around on the fire roads of Mt. Tam. He innovated along with the other WTB guys a lot of things we take for granted now.

I met Jacquie at a road race years ago. She was an amazingly cool fun interesting person and any man she would choose to spend her life with must also be an amazingly cool fun and interesting person too. And he was a true pioneer in the cycling world.

Good luck on your recovery Charlie.

I got a fever, and the only thing that can cure it is more cowbell in the sweet sound of tuned titanium.

What a beautiful tribute to a man who has given so much to each of us, without us even realizing the contributions he and his wife have made. That kind of selflessness should be returned, especially now when he needs it the most.
