Once you’ve got a camera, most of us end up looking for more interesting places to mount it. But additional mounts get expensive real quick, which is what makes the new Garmin VIRB XE cycling bundle attractive. In addition to the standard stick-on and bar mounts, you get a 16GB microSD card, small and large tube mounts, a vented helmet strap, and the new combo handlebar mount that lets you put your EDGE cycling computer atop the cam. And if you’ve got a compatible EDGE unit, it’ll give you ANT+ control over the VIRB XE!

All that’s yours for $449, a $50 premium over the standalone VIRB XE package. Considering the combo computer+camera mount alone is $45, the bundle offers a very good deal for all the extra goodies…

I can only assume these camera shapes stem from having to pack in certain size and shaped electronics into the camera…but man are some of these ugly! The GoPro/teletubby camera is the worst, and this isn’t far behind. The Shimano camera isn’t half bad, but the Contour is by far the best shape. Longer and slimmer is better than short and square!

I’m looking forward to when the tech is available and cheap enough to be included in the actual GPS device, like with cell phones. Just plop it up at the top of the device so its pointing forward when mounted.

does the Garmin Camera display spec, distance and all that other data on screen during playback?

The original Virb form factor was much better for cycling and has a lot of advantages over the Go Pro especially at the price they have been moving for the last year. Garmin system integration was great with a ton of devices. At the end of the day its a shame they didn’t keep the more narrow profile because its better for almost everything except a chest cam.

Just one man’s opinion, Allan, but while I agree with you on GoPro’s ugliness, I’ve found it far easier to mount multiple places and use than the Contour GPS I had previously. For a majority of my riding, mounting on the chest is ideal, and I was never able to rig something up with the Contour…

Honest question– I’m assuming road riders get more use out of stem mounts? On my MTB rides, I’d think that mounting on the stem would make me sick from the frequent side to side motion.
