Brisbane, Australia’s Carl Thom is passionate about exploring the world, and capturing his highlights on video. Thom wanted a versatile, durable light that could handle all of his hobbies from scuba diving to mountain biking, so he turned to Kickstarter with his design for the Sea Lantern Flame Angel.
Aside from its robust metal body, the Flame Angel’s key component is Sea Lantern’s new PPEC+ switch, which has no moving parts to ensure long-term waterproofness and durability. The product is already getting a good response, having just launched on Kickstarter yesterday.

Thom’s newly designed PPEC+ switch makes this the world’s first completely solid-state video and sports light. The switch (the gold end cap) has zero moving parts, leaving no chance for sand or grit to get in and damage water seals, a typical weak point on other lights. The touch-sensitive switch operates with or without gloves, and still works deep under water. The switch turns the light on and off, adjusts the output level, checks the battery life and enables a travel lock mode.
The durable looking design is crafted from your choice of three metals- The hard anodized 6061 aluminum is the light weight version at 160g. The austenite body (seen in the title photo) is the more durable nick and corrosion resistant option made from Austenitic stainless steel alloy, but is considerably heavier at 320g. There is also a limited edition run of black anodized magnesium bodies available, which weigh the same as the aluminum models. The body measures 5.1” long by 1.1” in diameter, and is waterproof to 300m. The included GoPro mount is removable for hand-held uses.
Two different versions of the Flame Angel will be available to suit your intended use. The Sport version outputs a focused, cool white LED light beam, while the Video version produces a wider, more even illumination for filming purposes. Both produce 1000 lumens at the maximum setting. The Flame Angel uses a built in lithium ion battery that charges with a micro USB cable. Burn times vary greatly depending on output- Expect to run for 22 hours in low, 5 hours in medium, and 1 hour at max.
The Flame Angel’s Kickstarter campaign ends April 28th, and Sea Lantern is aiming to ship the first units out in August. Currently the aluminum version can be had for $219, the austenite body for $249, and limited edition magnesium for $399.
