Ever head out on those long rides and have to plan your route around a convenience store stop just to fill your bottles? Or jump in a really hot cyclocross race where there are no handups allowed and your bike is sans cage?

Those are the problems Brian Davis had, so he decided to find a way to bring an extra bottle without any of the discomfort or annoyance of shoving a standard one in your jersey pocket. The BackBottle is an 18oz, recyclable and BPA-free wide mouth water bottle that uses a unique shape at the bottom with a flat side to keep it from rolling and rocking back and forth in your jersey. The flat side has grooves so air will flow between it and your back. So go on, back that thing up…

backbottle water bottle designed to fit in cycling jersey pocket

The BackBottle isn’t the first creation from Davis designed to solve a problem. He’s the inventor behind Fix It Sticks, a set of mini-tools that fit compactly into a pocket or saddle bag and can be switched between the bits you need so you’re not carrying extra stuff. We’re fans, particularly of the fixed T-handle shop version.

The bottle is 100% made in the USA and measures 8.5″ by 3″, just about the right size to stay snugly in a pocket while still being grippable and squeezable. It even has a “freeze below” line on the top so you don’t overfill it and have it burst the top in the freezer. They’re going on Kickstarter March 3, but are already available for pre-order at $10 or less depending on quantity on their website.

UPDATE: It’s live on Kickstarter now.

Davis mentioned a couple other uses, all of which we’ve experienced: Short races where a pack is overkill, and those days when you’re on your own at the races and don’t have anyone to feed a bottle between laps. Been there, done that.

For cycling, I’d choose a bottle cage mount installed at the seat rails. But for activities like running this might me much more comfortable than a neoprene belt. And the price looks nice, which is worth mentioning!

And you use as a second bottle or third bottle when the cages are full. Look like it needs a deep pocket sit well.

A great idea! Having enough water on long rides has been a major frustration. Yes, as PsiSquared asked – what is the jersey in the pic?

on extreamley long rides or long competitions always use for example old or new powerrade bottles. this I can thruw away when empty. (at depå area) And can be recyled in supermatrkets for money. Dont know why i should buy theese when soluotions allredy exsist?

More plastic products, is just what the earth needs….to be a little bit more ergonomic!?

I like it. I use something similar from Platypus that collapses as it empties. Not as easy to drink from, but when it’s empty, it’s “gone”.

Does it still fit in a standard bottle cage?

I think the best use of this is in the winter when bottles freeze on long rides below freezing. If you wear a jersey under a jacket, you can do this with any bottle(that’s what I do) but this would be far more comfortable.

I guess its a way out if you have two cages with no place to fill up and need a third bottle but I’d hate to be riding long enough(if I didn’t have to) with all that weight in my back. Not a big deal in the winter because you’re already a little uncomfortable but in the summer, I prefer to not have heavy things weighing down my jersey

Nice idea….however, I regularly ride with a 3rd bottle in my jersey pocket. 18oz is just not gonna cut it on long rides when you need that 3rd bottle.

I got excited when I saw this, then realized it won’t help the one thing that drives me nuts about a water bottle in my jersey pocket.

My spine. A tight fitting jersey makes the bottle constant shifting from one side to the other in the center pocket, and the slots added for breathability here just would accentuate that I think.

I love the idea. Low profile and flat against my back. I wish I would have thought of it first.

There is nothing more liberating than mountain biking without a camelbak or backpack on you back. I ride with two 16 oz bottles on my frame but it’s never enough. I can’t fit the larger bottles on my frame. Every time I try to put a third bottle in my jersey it fall out of my back pocket because it’s shifting around.

At $10 and made in the USA you can’t beat it. I’m ordering two of these bottles today.

How about something like a Vapur bottle? Or a Platypus Plus bottle? Bigger, lighter, collapsible, floppy so it really does mold to the shape of your back… and probably cheaper.

Nothing like a warm water bottle on a stinking hot day. Two bottles isn’t enough? It’s not that hard to plan for refill points even in the remotest of spots.

Good luck to them. I hope they sell thousands.

i might get one for long days. I just picked up my carbon CX frame from a composites repair guy who drilled another cage mount for me (frame only had one mount despite plenty of room for a seat tube one) since I was tired of doing this with a standard bottle.

did I really just read someone (Johan) advocate using disposable bottles instead of reusable ones… because of the environment? The cognitive dissonance is strong with this one…

or you can just put a normal insulated Camel Bak bottle in your rear jersey pocket I do this a lot and it works great for XC MTB and road.

I agree with Bill, needs the ridge down the middle to relieve pressure on the spine. that would also help it stay put better.

Brian Davis

AJ and Bill, the picture doesn’t come through very well, but the ridges stick out (they are convex) not in, so it will stay off your spine and prevent rolling.

I like this idea. I’m small, short, and women’s jerseys have absolutely HORRIBLE pockets on them. This seems like it would fit better than a standard round bottle and not wear holes in my spine. I’m always having to carry a spare bottle in my jersey on long cross or MTB rides because I can’t fit 2 bottles on my tiny frames and I hate carrying a pack (kills my neck and shoulders). Thanks for this idea.

Like. I assume this fits into the bottle cage when you make the switch from pocket to using it? I’d like to see that in a photo, woah!

Yes, it looks like a marital aid….no, it won’t stand up….yes, it’s definitely a niche market item….but….I think it’ll will be d*mn useful as the Summer heat cranks up … throw ten bucks at it, give it a shot ….

This is a great solution for those of us with full suspension bikes that are designed in such a way that only allows us to carry one water bottle. At races that require more than one, but less that a heavier hydration pack, this could be a good way to avoid dehydration and maximize performance.
