Many know Tullio Campagnolo for one of his most notable inventions, the modern quick release. Like any great inventor though, Tullio was always thinking of ways to improve the most basic tasks with typical Campagnolo precision and beauty. As the story goes, after hoping to impress some important friends with the best bottle of wine in his collection in 1966, the current method of wine cork removal caused the cork to crumble and leave residue in the wine.

That was all it took for Tullio to set off on a quest to create the ultimate wine bottle opener which resulted in the Cavatappi. Also known as the Big Corkscrew, the Cavatappi became a favorite among households and restaurants in Northern Italy and remains largely unchanged to this day. Mostly sold by word of mouth until now, Campagnolo has decided to offer the Big Corkscrew for sale through its own webstore to make the finest Cavatappi available even easier to get a hold of…

When Campagnolo calls it the ‘Big’ corkscrew, they mean it. Measuring in at 30×12 cm in size and 1 kg in weight, the oversized arms and corkscrew handle make opening any sized bottle of wine as easy as possible to minimize the chance of the cork breaking.

The Cavatappi (Italian for corkscrew) also features a telescoping bell which allows it to adapt to bottles of different sizes and shapes.

If those bolts look familiar, you might have seen then on Campagnolo cycling components over the years. Built with the same precision, craftsmanship, and quality control as their bicycle products, the Big Corkscrew is built to last with most of those sold in the past 3o plus years still in use. Available in either bronze or satin, the Big Corkscrew sells for roughly $217 (177€) and comes shipped in a beautiful wooden gift box.

It may be too late to get one in time for Christmas, but there’s always next year…

These have been available through distributors for years and even at wholesale they are way too rich for my blood.

Campy unfortunately no longer makes a plastic version, which was much higher value. Regardless of the material, it is the smoothest, most powerful, most reliable, safest, and fastest way to consistently pull intact corks. Whether it’s worth the cost is a personal choice (like high dollar bike components), but it does perform as promised (unlike many modern Campy bike parts).

Probably the classiest wine opener ever made.

Obviously not for commoners, but it is a must for any true bicycle/wine connoisseur and or campy fanatic.

It is undoubtedly the most expensive kitchenware I own!

I was lucky enough to receive a bronze one as a wedding gift from the bike shop I worked at. It is quite huge and comes in a nice little wooden crate which is a good thing since it won’t fit in a silverware drawer! I’m more of a beer drinker myself but I always welcome the chance to bust this thing out and put it to good use. It is superior in both design and function. The bolts are chainring bolts so you gram counters out there could sub them out for the lighter alloy models from the Super Record crankset. 😉

I’ll never buy one, but I would say it is much better value than a $300 fatbike tire. Certainly will see more use for most people.

I wanted to see the price and now I am scared away. Awesome craftwork though.

@ Cogzilla: you upper class snob, for $217 I could buy at least TWO shit-tons of boxed wine. Although after drinking it I’m not sure I would be convinced it had been a good idea. 😉

Doesn’t Rapha make a matching kit?

@ Bikeduder, wait until you get your kitchen aid mixer, Delonghi espresso maker or La Creuset cast iron cookware. Then the Campy corkscrew will seem cheap.

What’s funny is most wine geeks would agree the wing style opener is one of the lousiest ways to open a bottle.

Got one of these for my 30th. Absolutely brilliant. Expensive but work a treat and a pleasure to use.

My wife and I received a gold plated version as a wedding gift. It was given by the owners of a shop I started working for when I was 13. The plating peeled and my wife received 3 slivers in her finger. Eventually the slivers had to be surgically removed, which probably cost as much as the device itself. The quality of the plating was a prelude to Campy’s quality of today. There is currently a gold version on ebay for $7k, make offer. I believe ours has even more value because of its peeled patina. Just for fun, I’ll list it on ebay for $1k. just kidding. Despite the surgery, it was given to us by friends dear to our hearts.
