We spotted the new Wheels Manufacturing eccentric bottom bracket in prototype form this summer, and now it’s official. The precision milled part will fit BB30 and PFBB30 frames, converting any into a singlespeed bike.

The Enduro ABEC5 angular contact bearings fit a 24mm spindle, with versions for Shimano definitely and SRAM GXP. The outer pieces are machined from aluminum and use steel bolts to snug it into the frame and hold position. It’ll fit both 68mm and 73mm BB shells.

Around $125 retail, price will be finalized and production started for November delivery. More pics below…

Unlike some other brands’ EBBs, Wheels says all of their bottom brackets work on carbon frames. We just wouldn’t over tighten this one!

It includes outer bearing seals, spacers and a wave washer. Weight without those little bits is just 166g, not much more than a good threaded BSA bottom bracket.

Loosely related and in the same booth space was Enduro Bearings, which had some nifty new tools.

The problem with both this and the BEER EBB is that depending on how much chain slack you have/where the slot is located, you may run into problems where you can’t get a spanner in the slot because your chain stays are in the way. In addition, the bolts do not provide a strong enough of a link between the two halves to spin both sides together by applying the spanner on one side.

What would be ideal is to have both sides connect with a solid interface inside the shell (see the prototype version of the PF30 EBB from Niner) instead of being two separate pieces. The way to do this would be manufacture it all as one piece (think of a bone, with cups on the end, and a connector in the middle) then cut the thing in half, and have it re-attach with bolts. In addition, have some type of slotting that you can reach a slot, no matter what position the ebb is in. For example, I put some holes into my Beer EBB so I could fit a 4mm wrench in it (see link)

Other than being offered in a GXP option, how does this differ from the Problem Solvers BB that’s been out for a couple years? http://problemsolversbike.com/products/eccentric_46_bottom_bracket

I will stick with my TEAM BEER EBB–the first before Wheels or Problem Solvers. 5 years of cross and besides the occasional bearing change I have had zero issues.

1. All my bikes that could use a ebb are threaded bb.
2. Any new hardtail I buy will have adjustable dropouts of some sort, regardless of use. Old rigid seem to inevitably turn into ss (at least for me)
3. Apparently I am not the market for this…

“Unlike some other brands’ EBBs, Wheels says all of their bottom brackets work on carbon frames. We just wouldn’t over tighten this one!”

So if I read that correctly, they are saying this ebb is suitable for use with a full carbon bb (without an aluminum inner sleeve)?

If so, will Wheel reimburse people the cost of the frame if/when the bb cracks?

I’m not sh*tting on this ebb, it could actually change a bike build that I’m planning. I’m just curious as to how that will play out, if indeed they intend this ebb for full carbon bb’s.

I would love to hear the answer from Wheels to Andy’s question.

Why would it crack a carbon bb? Thats one of the most heavily built parts on a bike

These are held together with two M6 bolts theaded into alu. I expect the threads will pull in the alu before a frame cracks. My Beer BB has been perfect (thought I do use carbo grip). Follow the instructions, use a torque wrench and maintain common sense.

@ABW the E46 you link to is for BB 86 frames, which is a totally didn’t bottom bracket standard than PF30 or BB30. So it’s pretty much the same thing for for completely different bikes.

@codyfish, no ABW is correct, that problem solvers part is for a pf30 shell (the diameter is 46 mm, the crank’s spindle is where the 30 comes from). bb 86/92 shells don’t have a large enough diameter to effectively tighten a chain using an eccentric bb, that’s why nobody makes them.

I haven’t tried the beer components one, but have used the problem solvers variety which didn’t work well. FSA also manufactures one that works very well, its the one I currently run. iirc, it’s also a fair bit cheaper than the PS one too.

The Beer EBB slips. I had it in a carbon frame and not even carbon paste would hold it in place. I had bent bolts because of slippage. It’s not a good design.
