Known in the UK Continental peloton for riding the high quality steel bikes Genesis has built a reputation on, in a couple of weeks the Madison Genesis Team will be racing the upcoming Tour of Britain on the newly announced carbon Zero. The new bike, a first in carbon from Genesis, has been designed to excel in stage races at the pro level, where weight and aero improvements can have a real impact on incremental racing gains. The bike, available now, sits aside Genesis’ top level Volare 953 in the team quiver to be selected depending on race conditions.

Designed as a multi-day race bike, the Zero has a custom bladed fork that flows into a large Kamm-tail downtube to optimize aerodynamics and uses sizable headtube and bottom bracket junctions to maintain stiffness. But with their pedigree in comfortable riding steel bikes, Genesis stuck with a 27.2 post and incorporated ‘pencil thin’ seat stays. Prioritizing durability over maximum weight loss, the still respectable sub-1kg frame includes internal Di2-compatible routing, a 1 1/2” tapered full carbon fork, and uses BB86.

The new Zero frameset carries over through a six model range from the basic low end Shimano Tiagra spec’ed Zero.1 at £1300 up to the top end Dura Ace Zero Team at £4500. It’s nice to see that the same frame is used throughout the range, making ride quality available even at the lowest buy-in, while looking like a good platform for future component upgrades. Even better still, the Zero comes with a lifetime original owner warranty on the frameset.

If only it had mudguard mounts, it’s a British company, they should’ve known better!

Ultegra Di2 for £3000 and mech Dura-Ace for £4500? Shouldn’t it be the other way?

Genesis’ pricing is very odd. You could buy the Zero.1, a full DA groupset, and the wheelset for £3000. Ok you’d have to swap it all over and you don’t get the lovely paint scheme, but still…

That Dura-Ace pricing does seem a little odd, but buying the group and wheels at retail would be closer to £4000 or so. And Ultegra Di2 is usually just £500 more than Ultegra mechanical, but the Di2 bike does have a wheelset upgrade as well. I’ll see if I can get a response from them when we sit down next week, but to me what it looks like is just that the low-end models are pretty good deals.

I think this is disappointing by not having Carbon Fiber bikes Genesis were making a point that top end bikes could be metal and setting themselves apart from other manufacturers. Now they have a carbon fiber option I think they have lost or reduced their USP.
