Morvelo x Chickens Frame Emporium Sweet City Cross Bicycle

UK Clothing brand Morvelo’s been teasing us with videos of their CityCross series, a short course urban event that even they say is well suited to mountain bikes.

Now, they’ve got something better. The Morvelo x Chickens Frame Emporium CityCross frame is a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll, made just for the rigors of fast city riding. In their own words, it “was to bridge a gap where cyclocross leaves and MTB begins, mixed with the speed of road and the playfulness of a BMX.”

The steel Columbus Life frame was built by Jon “Chickens” with a black paint scheme and bare fillet brazing, creating a beautiful, one-off finish…

Chickens is a small, one man frame builder shop in the UK, and this bike was built as much to tackle the unique race as to showcase his talents. Spec is:

  • FSA cockpit
  • Whisky No.9 Carbon Bolt Thru fork
  • Reynolds 29er carbon MTB wheels
  • Maxxis Raze tyres
  • SRAM Type 2 clutch rear mech
  • Absolute Black Thick/Thin CX specific chainring
  • TRP HyRd discs

…and some of the bling was chosen in gold, too.

The bike is built to handle stair drops, curb hops and anything else an urban ‘cross race could throw at it, with geometry somewhere between a 29er hardtail and traditional cyclocross rig. Want.

  1. Very nice looking. I wonder what the max width tire you can put on the rear? That tends to be the limiting factor on all my cross bikes.

  2. That bike looks amazing and I’d love to have one. The only thing I find funny is that it was built “to bridge a gap where cyclocross leaves and MTB begins, mixed with the speed of road and the playfulness of a BMX.” That sounds a little too good to be true.

All that said, I want one for what it is.

  3. Collin, any cross bike that uses road components is limited to 35-38mm rubber, because that’s the widest you can spread chainstays behind a road crank. Only the monstercrossers that use mountain cranks can go wider.

  4. @mudrock, I think you are being a little too conservative on max. tire width. With appropriate shaping and crimping of tubes, 45mm with a road crankset is achievable, and I have a bike that proves it. Looking at the frame above (and yes, it is sweet!), the absence of these features surprises me. A bike that claims to bridge the gap between CX and MTB (i.e. monstercross) should surely push tire clearance to the max.?

  5. That colour scheme takes me back to the “John Player Special” cars when I was a kid.
(I am no fan of smokes/smoking).

    Great piece of craft.

  6. Good looking, well built and looks like it should ride like a dream. Hats off. I think jon is at the bike show in london next month.

  7. The fillet brazing, as well as the whole bike, is beautiful. All tolled, it’s a classy looking bike. I think there was a bike at NAHBS in the last few years that was fillet brazed and clear coated so that the brass in the joints contrasted the steel tubes gorgeously. Mmmm. I’d love a fillet brazed, clear coated stainless steel frame.
