It’s an indicator chain/spindle fpr a Sturmey Archer three speed hub. The spindle screws into the hub and the chain sticks out and attaches to the shift cable.

It’s either a cassette whip (to break down a cassette )
OR a midevil evil whip (to break down subjects and lazy employees! !)

OlePaikkonen - 01/16/12 - 7:14am

short chain for changing gears (usual 3 gear head) going inside rear head

Adam - 01/16/12 - 8:02am

Agreed.

Deiric - 01/16/12 - 8:14am

Ah the memories, my fist bike had this and I disassembled and assembled it so many times. My tickey to freedom.

Sturmy Archer 3spd indicator chain. Maybe Sach’s… not sure about that block on the long rod…

JVee - 01/16/12 - 9:20am

Agree with others about the indicator chain for internally gear hub. Chris commented on the odd looking rod length and end portion which is quite unlike most classic Sturmy indicator chains (8spd version?). Possibly a Sachs Orbit type system

peter - 01/16/12 - 11:01am

Sachs Torpedo timing chain.

peter - 01/16/12 - 11:02am

That was supposed to be: Sachs Torpedo Indicator Chain. Must have tandems on the brain today.

Scott Wiliams - 01/16/12 - 11:04am

When the chain broke …in went a spoke bent over for the desired gear and cut with pliers…

Adam - 01/16/12 - 11:31am

indicator chain from a sachs (3 speed) internally geared hub- the sturmey archer one comes to more of a bullet-looking point on the end which threads into the hub.

2wheeler - 01/16/12 - 1:03pm

sturmey Archer 3 speed shifter rod and connecting chain. threads into the center of the hub thru the hollow axle.

S Querney - 01/16/12 - 1:32pm

That is a Sturmey-Archer Toggle chain for a 3-speed internal gear.

C Igleheart - 01/16/12 - 4:25pm

It is a 4 speed Sturmey Archer indicator pull rod from the 50′s

Kristibee - 01/17/12 - 1:30pm

Answer: Sturmey Archer SW 3spd indicator chain!

brady - 01/26/12 - 7:15pm

it is without a dought a mechanism for an internal hub weither it be 3 or 4 speed but to me it looks like a 3 speed sturney
