I thought that was illegal in cyclocross…
It’s not illegal for the rider not to dismount. It’s rather illegal for the race organizers to create an obstacle which can be passed without dismounting (or rather: they are obliged to create such an obstacle). The difference is huge.
It’s only faster if you don’t crash – see Todd Wells, USGP Fort Collins 2010 2nd day, he stacked it with 3 laps to go and DNFed.
