SRAM Leaks Images of New Brakes

2012 new sram red brake hoods image leak

While out on a pre-launch ride in Majorca, Spain, SRAM snapped a few photos and uploaded them to their Facebook page. They clearly show a revised hood shape with a more pronounced, sharply vertical knob at the front. The lip on the bottom of the brake lever looks a bit more curved, too. They also not-so-clearly showed the brake calipers…

Breaking! Bicycle and Pedestrian Funding Seriously Endangered – Here’s How You Help!

From the League of American Bicyclists:

Moments ago, Congressman John Mica (R-FL) announced the introduction of the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act. The proposed bill eliminates dedicated funding for bicycling and walking as we feared, and it goes much further and systematically removes bicycling from the Federal transportation program. It basically eliminates our status and standing in the planning and design of our transportation system — a massive step backwards for individuals, communities and our nation. It’s a step back to a 1950s highway- and auto-only program that makes no sense in the 21st century.

The bill reverses 20 years of progress by:

  • destroying Transportation Enhancements by making it optional;
  • repealing the Safe Routes to School program, reversing years of progress in creating safe ways for kids to walk and ride bicycles to school;
  • allowing states to build bridges without safe access for pedestrians and bicycles;
  • eliminating bicycle and pedestrian coordinators in state DOTs; and
  • eliminating language that insures that rumble strips “do not adversely affect the safety or mobility of bicyclists, pedestrians or the disabled.”

On Thursday, the House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee will mark-up the bill and Representatives Petri (R-WI) and Johnson (R-IL) will sponsor an amendment that restores dedicated funding for Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School. Representatives Petri and Johnson can only be successful if everyone with a stake in safe sidewalks, crosswalks, and bikeways contacts their representative today.

Because of these urgent new developments, and the vital importance of a HUGE turnout on Capitol Hill in March, the National Bike Summit early bird registration deadline has been extended to Feb 20. We need every single cyclist in Washington, D.C. that the city can hold (and that’s thousands …). Register today!

New Performance, Casual Sunglasses from Rudy Project

We saw several new models from Rudy Project at Eurobike, and now there are a couple of stragglers joining the lineup.

Above, the Revenge offers a somewhat familiar looking full coverage single lens design. Frames are available in gloss black or white and the clear Flouro yellow/green shown above, which matches up perfectly with their day-glo helmets. Lenses are interchangeable and they’ve got standard gray plus mirrored blue, red and green lenses as well as their Racing Red, which is a decent all-purpose lens.

MSRP starts at $180 for the Revenge. Post ride, the new Skymajor is a smaller aviator style we kinda dig, too…

Prototype Foldable Helmet by Agency 360

As an avid mountain biker and commuter I am a firm proponent of helmets. Unfortunately, the majority of casual cyclists don’t seem to share my preoccupation with safety. This folding helmet designed by French design studio Agency 360 is intended to increase the appeal of helmets to urban riders.  The helmet, called the Overade, offers the same level of comfort and protection as a standard bicycle helmet (by meeting European safety standards), but folds up conveniently. The patented folding system allows the helmet to decrease to a third of its size – making it small enough to slip into a purse, backpack, or briefcase.

Look’s Keo Power Pedal System Starts Shipping

Look Keo Power measurement pedals finally start shipping

Look’s Keo Power pedal-based power measurement system is finally shipping.

After teasing it in late summer 2010, then showing it at Interbike that year and in a more final form factor last year, the Keo Power pedals and associated transmitters developed in partnership with Polar are finally ready to show how much power you’re layin’ down.

The Keo Power system’s pedals use axles with eight strain gauges per spindle to measure deflection and determine how much force you’re applying. Having so many gauges per pedal brings accuracy up to +/- 2%, and another sensor captures cadence. All of this information moves from the pedal to the transmitter, which attaches to the spindle on the inside of the crank arm, then beams it wirelessly to a compatible Polar computer (CS500, CS600 or CS600X).

Santa Cruz Syndicate and SRAM to Part Ways After 8 Year Partnership

For nearly as long as I have been following the Peaty and the downhill race scene, SRAM and the Santa Cruz Syndicate seemed to go hand in hand. Wherever you would see Peat, Minnaar, Bryceland, etc, you would see them aboard the latest and greatest from the big red machine. As they say, all good things come to an end, and after 8 long and successful years, the Syndicate is thanking Sram for their incredible support while moving on.

What are they moving to? Rumors have been circulating that the new bikes will be equipped with Shimano parts and possibly Fox suspension, but only time will tell.

Check out the full press release from Santa Cruz after the break.

Skyde Intros Custom Titanium Front Triangles for Any Full Suspension Mountain Bike

What started off with a ti Yeti 575 customization has become a full blown titanium upgrade option from French framebuilder Ronnie Calvet and his company, Skyde.

Shown here is the latest version mated to an Engine Labs 120mm rear end, which is an updated version of the NRS design used on older Giant mountain bikes. The new front end replaces the alloy triangle with cold worked, double butted 3/2.5 titanium. All machined parts are 6/4 ti, and it’s made to exactly imitate the geometry and even the look of the original in this case.
