Friday Roundup – Bicycle Bits and Pieces

bicycle care station at the gas station in copenhagen

  • The gas station chain Statoil in Copenhagen is adding “bicycle care stations” at its gas stations to accommodate the growing cycling culture (!). Air pump, rubber gloves and cleaning supplies will be free of charge and hex keys, oil and tire levers will be available to borrow (presumably behind the counter) and tubes and other basic supplies will be available for purchase. Kudos to Statoil for expanding their customer base and creating another revenue stream! (via Guerrilla Innovation) A nice write up about it here.
  • U.S. based Huffy is expanding its market to India.
  • Cycling Fusion is coming soon to a health club near you, or your living room, to give you “everything you need indoors to improve your cycling outdoors,” including certified instructors at your local gym, or online training in your living room…
  • Chicago’s City Council’s Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety passed a measure on Monday to fine cyclists for texting or talking on a cell phone while riding, leveling the playing field between bicycle riders and drivers on the matter. The measure includes a graduated scale of fines — from $20 to $50 for the first offense to $75 to $100 for three or more violations and up to $500 if the violation coincides with a traffic accident.
  • Based on the success of last year’s one-day inaugural event, the New Amsterdam Bicycle Show, which benefits the advocacy organization Transportation Alternatives, will expand to a two-day run on April 28-29, 2012. It also gets a new location: The Tent at Lincoln Center at Damrosch Park in Manhattan, which is where NYC Fashion Week is held!
