Specialized Recalls 14,200 Bikes Because Carbon Forks May Break

specialized carbon fork recall for brake post cracks in 2011

Specialized has issued a recall of 14,200 bicycles spec’d with carbon forks manufactured by the Advanced Group of Taiwan. The issue, shown above, is that the brake’s post-mounts may crack and disengage from the fork, rendering them useless at best or get into the spokes and send someone flying at worst. Full CSPC details after the break, or hit their website for pics of the bikes affected.

Video: 2012 Salsa Cycles Spearfish, Horsethief 29er Rundown & Weights, Plus Titanium Mukluk Snow Bike

We took a little grief for our coverage of the new Horsethief at Eurobike, so we met up with Tim Krueger, brand manager for Salsa Cycles, at Interbike’s (windy) outdoor demo to get the facts straight. He also showed us the new titanium Mukluk, their new top model for snow bikes.

We weighed a few of the 29ers, too. See ‘em on the scale after the break…

Interbike 2011: Osprey packs get simpler, go bigger

While Osprey’s entries into the bike market have all been very well built, it turns out that some riders aren’t looking for quite so much organization (or the weight and complexity that it can bring) in their packs.  For them, Osprey has released the pared-back Syncro 10, 15, and 20.

On the rough & tumble side of things, Osprey’s Zealot is a freeride-oriented pack that is a bit sturdier, is fairly thin (to be comfortable while riding the lifts), and has full clamshell-style access and a cool tool roll that deploys from the bottom of the bag:

Interbike 2011: CamelBak Space MULE

I didn’t get a chance to walk down the CamelBak line with their PR folks this year (look to Zach for a post at some point), but this bag caught my eye as I was walking by. I desperately wanted it to be a Space HAWG, but Space MULE will have to do. OK, so it turns out that it’s not the Space MULE- according to Camelbak, it’s the Tin Man MULE, and Mark Weir has been riding one all season.  The fabric seems to have come directly from my childhood astronaut costume and will do a good job at making its wearer easy to spot in a race or after falling down a ravine. That can’t be the whole story behind the silvery bag, it’s pretty cool regardless.

$100 | 9.5L cargo capacity | 3L bladder

Interbike 2011: One slick lock from Kuat

Built for riders who don’t necessarily have dedicated townies but want to run some quick errands on their normal bike, Kuat’s aptly named Bottle Lock is a coil lock that winds into a water bottle shaped holder. Being self-contained (the key lives in a bottom compartment), the lock is easy to toss into a bottle cage on the way out the door. Turning the top cap winds the lock right back up.  A great casual lock idea that will sell for $34 when it ships this November…

Praxis Works Concept Carbon Fiber Crankset with M35 Bottom Bracket BB 1

Praxis Works chainring, and their M35 BB system have been around for a little while now.  What we did see that was new this year was a prototype crank.  Adam pulled me over to the side, slid out a large black storage container filled with foam, and proceeded to pull out a pretty awesome looking prototype crankset.

VP Components Debuts Varial Externally Switchable Angle Adjust Headset, Axle-Less Pedals, More

VP Components Pilot axle-less 7mm flat pedal

VP Components brought the innovation with a new trail-side adjustable angle headset and the new Pilot, an axle-less flat pedal.

The Pilot uses a house-ground bearing race with hand picked bearings. The design and careful assembly allows them to improve the strength by using a larger ball since it’s not relying on a separate sealed bearing. There’s also a small sealed cartridge bearing on the outside edge of the bulge. It all comes together for a thin, 7mm body height. The one above is a prototype/mock up, the production versions will be forged.

KindShock Unveils New LEV Integra Dropper Post, Along With LEV

There is no denying the fact that dropper seat posts can have a dramatic effect on the way you ride, yet it seems that for every positive, there is at least one negative. Dropper posts may be one of the only products that someone looks at and thinks, “this will make my bike heavier and more complicated, but I’m ok with that.” However, there is no denying the fact that with each successive generation of dropper posts, they keep getting better.

At Interbike this year, KindShock had not one, but two brand new dropper post designs that will leave a lot of people asking why someone hasn’t done this sooner. While the LEV post with its exposed cable was outed a few months ago, the internally routed LEV Integra was a surprise.

See what makes these posts different after the break!

New Lightweight Goodies From KCNC – Pedals, Cassettes and Cables

KCNC lightweight cassette with 11-38 cogs

In addition to the trick titanium DLC headset and spiderweb chainrings found on the Fair Wheel Bikes builds (road and mtb), FWB had a number of other new goodies from KCNC on hand.

Above, perhaps just for shock value, is an 11-38 mountain bike cassette. They’re working on an extended derailleur cage and/or mount to give it the clearance it needs to work with such a large cog. The other is an 11-23 for road. Super light, starts around $370. Make the jump for weights and more…
