Interbike Randomness – New DZR Performance Shoe and Knog Locks

DZR Shoes New Designs

It’s no secret that I love my Mission Workshop DZR shoes.  I wear them nearly every day.  When strolling through the DZR booth this year I was very pleased to find a myriad of new designs, along with a performance oriented sole in some of those new shoes.

Run on past the jump for the rest of the details.

Interbike 2011: Foundry Bikes Debut Carbon Fiber Road, Mountain & Cyclocross Bicycles

2012 Foundry Cycles Auger disc brake cyclocross bike

Foundry Bikes, like the Whisky Parts Co. that also launched out of QBP this summer, is based around the idea of honest parts for hard working riders.

In the spirit of that honesty, brand manager Jason Grantz isn’t hiding the fact that these bikes started life as an open mold frame. But that’s just the beginning. Each of the models – road, cyclocross and 29er mountain bike hardtail are on tap – gets its own tweaks to make them special, and some of them are exclusive to Foundry.

UPDATE! Clarification on the open-mold issue listed after each model below…turns out the Ratchet 29er is their own mold, and details on the others added. QBP spent three years vetting suppliers and manufacturers in the lead up to creating the Foundry brand and says they work with two of the top five contract manufacturers in the world. Then, the products are third-party verified for CEN safety testing to exceed standards by 10% to 20%, which lets them give the frames a 10-year warranty with generous crash replacement program.

The Auger cyclocross bike gets two models, one with disc brakes (shown) and one with standard cantilevers. The frames are either one or the other, there are no disc tabs on the canti version, and no brake bosses on the disc version. They’re spec’d with the appropriate Whisky tapered carbon fork. It’s made with high modulus carbon fiber with a UD finish, PFBB30 bottom bracket shell and comes in four sizes: 50, 53, 56 and 59.

Interbike 2011: Dirty Italian Carbon from Fulcrum

Both eye-wateringly lovely and eye-wateringly expensive, Fulcrum was proudly displaying this Red Carbon XRP wheelset at Interbike a couple of weeks back.  The high-flange straight-pull hubs are a departure for Campagnolo’s alternative wheel brand.  The claimed 1,347g weight won’t break any records, but a look at the details show that Fulcrum don’t do things by half.  If my own experience with an older Red Metal wheelset is any indication, the Red Carbon XRPs should be some of the longest-spinning wheels anywhere- and they’ll stand up to far more abuse than they should.  Click through for the nicest carbon valve seat I’ve seen, a nice looking front hub- and the bottom line.

Interbike 2011: Chrome take the Citizen back to black, add Citadel weekender

Every time we cruised by the Chrome booth at Interbike earlier this month, the place was rammed with bag fetishists checking out the goods and enjoying the booth-top DJ.  That meant that we weren’t able to get our hands on the goods- but their PR Coordinator was good enough to send over the details on and pictures of some as-yet unreleased bags.  Click though for our picks…

Eurobike Randomness – Nuke Proof, Pinion & Parts of Passion

Parts of Passion cycling components carbon fiber seatposts and seatmasts and seat collar clamps

Parts of Passion started as a distributor of lightweight parts and, since 2008, has slowly morphed into a product manufacturer.

This year, they brought out a mostly complete line of cockpit components and wheels. Shown above are the ridiculously lightweight seatpost (118g), seatmast (60g) and seat collar clamp (5.5g). For the post and mast, the tube is full carbon with alloy bracket and pins and titanium bolts. The collar is a carbon fiber clamp with aluminum bolt and ti screw. All are available in a variety of sizes and shapes.

More from them, plus Nuke Proof’s new body armor and some interesting gear box concepts from Pinion, after the break…

Oregon Manifest – Constructor’s Challenge Photo Gallery

2011 Oregon Manifest Constructors Challenge utility commuter bike by Cielo Chris King

If you’re pressed for time or you’ve got a helicopter parent for a boss, here’s a collection of highlights from the 2011 Oregon Manifest Constructor’s Challenge. These are the bikes that were made and designed exclusively by the builders, unlike the design collaborations that paired a famous design house with a builder shown here.

When you get a little more tiempo, check out the official website for a full gallery from each builder. And Core77 is the official media partner for the contest, so they’ve got a bit more there.

The bike above is from Chris King’s Cielo brand. More after the break…

Oregon Manifest – Urban Bicycle Design Collabos from Rock Lobster, Signal & SyCip

2011 Oregeon Manifest Constructers Challenge urban bike design collaboration with Ziba and Signal Cycles with convertible cargo sidecar bike

For this year’s Oregon Manifest Constructor’s Challenge, an additional category was opened that paired design houses with builders. The point of the contest is to reimagine the bicycle into the ultimate utilitarian commuter bike, something that could replace the car and make transportation and errand running easy and fun. Three collaborations were introduced: IDEO x Rock Lobster, FuseProject x SyCip and Ziba Design x Signal Cycles – and all three came up with some very interesting cargo/commuter bicycles.

Above is the Ziba-Signal Cycles Fremont, a step through mixte with integrated rear rack that folds open to create a sidecar. They’ve already filed a patent for the design, which allows for small cargo to be placed on the rack or larger cargo to ride shotgun. It includes folding, weatherproof pannier bags that open up into the large sacks shown here. They can easily go into and out of the store so you don’t need to decide between paper or plastic, and they’ll lock to the bike (and lock closed), so you can leave them on board for quick trips into and out of the coffee shop, etc.

Roll through the break for pics and more design conscious cycling goodness…

Interbike 2011: Vredestein back in the USA- and rolling big

After parting ways with (now defunct) distributor Veltec back in May, Vredestein were at Interbike this month announcing their partnership with Move Sport and showing some cool-looking 26in and 29er tires beside their well-regarded road racing line.  The mountain tires all look to be available in tube and tubeless-ready configurations and the 26in tires in UST tubeless versions as well- all with triple-compound rubber for an appealing $70 retail.  The Spotted Cat, Black Panther (above), and Black Panther Extreme run from fast to knobby in that order.  Click through for more pictures and details…
