Hands On: 3T Luteus Disc Brake Cyclocross Fork Photo’d, Weighed

hands on with the 2012 3T Luteus carbon fiber disc brake cyclocross fork with photos and actual weights

Sure, there are a handful of disc brake specific cyclocross forks popping up on the aftermarket now, but none seems to have elicited the response that 3T’s new Luteus has.

We just got one in for testing and, honestly, it’s a darn nice looking fork out of the box. We’ve heard from some Euros that it’s hands down the best one available, but we’ll put it through our own cruddy, grimy, muddy hell to see for ourselves starting in October. For now, check out the photos, actual weight and some other heretofore unknown details about the Luteus right after the break…

Interbike 2011: Axiom introduce machined pumps… that aren’t polished!

Lying seductively in a bed of coffee beans at this year’s Interbike show, Norco’s house brand Axiom were displaying a couple of the more interesting mini pumps I’ve seen.  Not fundamentally different from anything else on the market, the contrast between anodized/knurled and machined surfaces caught my eye.  Satisfying to hold, the Blastair HPL (high pressure long?) and HVL (high volume long?) mini pumps felt nicer than their $40-ish retail price would suggest.  Click though for a head details…

Interbike 2011: Formula give brakes a break, get wheels off the ground

Looking remarkably similar to the those shown last year, Formula’s Volo (“flight” in Italian) wheelsets (26in and 29er in XC and All Mountain variations) are finally nearing delivery- and still looking good.  (But what is it about Italians and red?)  With freehubs specifically designed to support the engagement mechanism and reduce the pops and damage that can come from partial engagement, the hub shells are intricately machined inside and out- and build up to some surprisingly light wheels that could give carbon hoops a run for their money.  Find out more- and see some revamped brakes- after the break.

Video: Peloton Magazine Creates Their Own Stig, Punishes Road Bikes in Top Gear

File this under “damnit, why didn’t we think of this!

Peloton Magazine has just introduced Mr. H (for Hematocrit), a helmet-masked pro who, in Top Gear vein, anonymously flogs road bikes in an attempt to see what the fastest road bike is. Now, if they could just secure a single bike for the year and start getting cycling celebrities to pit their safety against the clock for bragging rights. That, my friends, would be awe. some.

Tiso Shows Prototype Electronic 12-Speed Drivetrain, Ultralight Titanium Cassette & Pulleys

Tiso prototype electronic 12 speed derailleurs and bicycle drivetrain from Italy

Tiso, an Italian bicycle component manufacturer that’s represented by Albabici here in the states, had quite the gawker piece laying around: A prototype 12-speed electronic drivetrain that, despite the cables here, will be wireless when it debuts!

Details are scant, but the owner says it’s in development now with plans to be in production sometime in 2012. Of course, they’ll need to develop a 12-speed cassette and chain, but that shouldn’t be a problem…

2012 Rocky Mountain Vertex 990 Rsl Carbon 29er Hardtail Weighed, Photo’d

2012 Rocky Mountain Vertex 990 Rsl carbon fiber hardtail 29er mountain bike weights and photos

Rocky Mountain is rolling out a cadre of new XC racer 29ers, both hardtail and suspension. We’ve shown a good bit of the full suspension alloy Element 970/950/930 here, and they wouldn’t let us weigh the Interbike models because they weren’t quite production spec, so we’re just running down the Vertex 990 Rsl hardtail here.

The Vertex Rsl 29ers will come in two models, the 990 and 970, both with the same frame built using their SmoothWall construction that sculpts the inside tube walls via an inner mold. RM says this reduces excess resin, removes stress risers and lowers weight.

Interbike 2011: Of course Wheels Manufacturing should do hubs…

…after all, with a name like Wheels Manufacturing and twenty-three years of machining experience, hubs  would be an obvious fit.  Though we saw them exhibiting Alchemy’s hubs (which they build) at Interbike last year, this year Wheels Manufacturing were showing their own-design J-28 hubs.  Intended to be “practical, durable, and affordable,” the J-28s are made by Wheels right here in the USA.  Hit the jump for more details…

Interbike 2011: Road Tubeless, mid-priced mountain wheels, and one huge bag from American Classic

As is always the case, we had  a great time talking with Ellen and Bill from American Classic at Interbike this year- the company from Florida is always truly excited about their new products and are always trying to push their wheels forward.  In addition to the new road tubeless wheels and lighter-still mountain wheels that Tyler covered at Eurobike, AC were showing off a redesigned Terrain mid-range wheelset as well as what may be the world’s biggest wheel bag.  Read on for the details…
