Augmented-reality ad campaign highlights the dangers of lorries’ blind spots.

Images: WeMadeThis

On March 22, two London cyclists were killed in incidents involving heavy goods vehicles, less than a mile away from each other in Southwark, south-east London. While all the facts about these tragedies are not yet known, it is a terrible reminder of the timeliness of Transport for London’s current ad campaign, which highlights the dangers of lorries’ blind spots in an innovative and easy-to-understand way.

White lorry-shaped flyers have been popping up on bike handlebars across town. “Lorry blind spots are bigger than you think,” they warn. “Use this lorry and your webcam to see the blind spots come to life in 3D at tfl.gov.uk/seetheblindspot.”

An explanation and pictures of what happens follow after the break.

Un-Pro Bike: Rich “Dicky” Dillen’s Custom Misfit Psycles Psingle Pspeed 29er

Unprofessional cyclist Rich “Dicky” Dillen has teamed up with Canadian frame builder Peter Keiller of Misfit Psycles to create this miniature version of a bicycle. My understanding is that Mr. Dillen couldn’t find a bicycle small enough to accommodate his homunculean stature, so he had to have this custom frame built. And, due to his freakish biomechanical issues, Mr. Dillen coerced Keiller into building the frame around a Niner Biocentric eccentric bottom bracket, instead of the stock sliding dropouts. You see, Dillen’s body is so sensitive to hot and cold that it literally contracts and expands depending on the temperature. Therefore he requires an EBB. With an EBB he can rotate the position of his bottom bracket, effectively changing his fit on the bike. He couldn’t accomplish this with sliders. With sliders he’d be relegated to setting the bike up for hot or cold days. A state of affairs that would be simply unconscionable.

Weight , more photos, and some specs after the break. Oh, and be forewarned, the last photo contains adult language. Eye-muffs children, eye-muffs.

Photos of London 2012 Olympic Mountain Bike Course

2012-london-olympic-mountain-bike-course-hadleigh-park

The BBC News has this and other great images of the mountain bike course built at Hadleigh Farm outside London for the 2012 Olympic Games. While there aren’t a ton of images, the course does look fun, and seeing racers come through this rock garden neck and neck fighting for one of the three lines will certainly be entertaining. We’ll see who’ll pull the Paola Pezzo move off the outside line FTW!

Project 24 Review: 2011 Magura Durin 100 Race suspension fork

See all of our Project 24 posts here!

It’s been nearly a decade time since I’ve owned a suspension fork that could claim (with a straight face) to be anywhere in the neighborhood of 3lb. Somehow, after letting go of V-brakes and aluminum hardtails, I became attached to the idea of small bump compliance and, uh, front wheels receiving eventually messages from the handlebar. Not that race-oriented forks haven’t evolved in the intervening years, but my riding style has changed form NORBA-style sprints to longer, more epic days and events. Though I’ve participated in at least one 24-hour race every year since giving up my SID and ShokPost, I’ve never built a bike specifically with that sort of riding in mind. Project 24 was just such a build, and I knew that finding a suspension fork to match my preference for suppleness and steering precision could present a challenge. Enter Magura’s 2011 Durin 100 Race.

2012 Truvativ Components Outed – Wider Bars, Fresh Graphics, White Paint

2012 truvativ stylo alloy handlebars

Truvativ has just released their 2012 components line, and there’s fresh paint, graphics and sizes across the entire range of handlebars, stems and seatposts. They’ve also followed trends and instituted a numbered naming scheme within each group to make it easier to know where parts stand in the heirarchy.

The updates span from the lightweight XC/Race oriented Noir line all the way to the overbuilt Hussefelt group and generally bring wider handlebar options to the table and match up the graphics and colors to the stem and post. For some of the groups, this means a complete cockpit and partial drivetrain can now come from the same line.

The official consumer launch is April 14, the first day of the Sea Otter Classic (where we hear they’ll have some SRAM road announcements, too). Jump on past the break to see the goods…

They also won “Best Touring Bike” for their Modern Classic Randonneur bike and had a bilaminate construction 29er mountain bike. See what the heck that is after the break…

Elite Introduces Ozone-Infused Sports Lotion to Oxygenate Muscles

Elite has just come out with their Endurance Protect Cream, part of their Ozone line of skincare items that claim to have lots of Ozone in them to help oxygenate and rejuvenate muscles.

It also has several natural ingredients that act as soothing, softening, cooling and anti-inflammatory agents. There’s not a lot of science mentioned in the press release or website, so if anyone’s tries this stuff (or the other products in the line), let us know in the comments.

They have a website just for the Ozone line here.

Video: Mutiny Bikes – Dallas/Fort Worth TX

Dallas/Fort Worth TX from Mutiny Bikes on Vimeo.

I promised myself I wouldn’t say “if you watch one BMX video today, it should be this one,” but I couldn’t do it; this video from Mutiny Bikes is just too good not to. Maybe I’ve had my head in the sand regarding the progression of BMX cinematography, but this is incredibly impressive to me, a truly beautiful piece of film work, a quantum leap in technique and presentation. We’re talking Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus compared to Avatar here. Of course if you know of videos that come close to hitting this mark (or surpassing it), enlighten the rest of us in the comments section. Oh, and the fakie 540° at about 3:30…damn.
