New From Lupine: Piko 3 Light-weight Helmet Light

The Lupine Piko 3 is a light-weight helmet light (it weighs in at 55g), that puts out a very heavy-weight 550 lumens. It attaches to the helmet with a hook-and-loop velcro strap. OK, a “velcro®-like” strap. Remind me to secure the trademarks for a bunch of stuff with the “-like” after the name of the thing — “yes, these shorts are made out of Lycra-like®…it’s sort of like Lycra!” The possibilities are endless.

The Piko is said to be the equivalent of half a Lupine Wilma in output and weight. It uses a special version of Lupine’s 2.5Ah Li-Ion battery encased in plastic with a belt slot instead of the normal Lupine soft-case to minimize mass and bulk. The focus with the Piko is on light weight and wear-ability.

Any Li-Ion battery and charger  is compatible with the Piko (like all other Lupine lighting systems), but Lupine says that it is more economical to buy the Piko 3 lamp/battery/charger as a package at $310 (the lamp alone is $278).

Just purchased the piko from Gretnabikes. Simply, it’s a great light and feathery light, as mentioned in this bikerumor article. Hard to believe so much light can come out of this tiny lamphead.
And, the battery is small, so I can easily mount on my handlebar, which was hard to do with bigger batteries (that came with the Betty), instead of mounting on your top tube.
At the high setting, I found the piko produced more than enough light for night-time trail riding, and at the lower settings the light is perfect
for commuting. The only downside is that the handlebar mount has to be purchased separately, but the mount is inexpensive, though. The only thing missing
from Lupine is a kick-ass tail light.
