UK Based Planet-X Buys Titus at Auction

Planet X, a UK-based internet retailer that has also had it’s own dirt jump an mountain bike brands in the past, has purchased the assets of Titus out of foreclosure.

UK-based internet retailers Planet X have bought US mountain bike assets from major lender Factors Southwest (FSW) on Tuesday night after emerging victorious from a second round of bidding.

“Titus have a lot of followers and as a result we had strong interest,” Robyn Barrett, founder and managing member of FSW, told BikeRadar. “We’re very pleased with the outcome of the sale and believe Planet X are a great fit and will carry the brand through and take the company to the next level.”

After failing to make several loan payments to Factors Southwest (FSW), Titus closed shop last week after announcing they were looking for new owners. Despite putting out some rather nice looking bikes (our opinion) over the past few years, The company had not been making the sales volume it needed since the departure of founder Chris Cocalis in 2006, during which time ownership changed twice.

No word yet on whether manufacturing will move from their current Arizona plant to the UK, but FSW has said that they would expect any new owner to honor warranty and parts concerns.

Cocalis founded Titus in 1991 and headed the company until selling his ownership in 2006 to Vyatek Sports. Vyatek sold the brand to Pheonix, AZ, based GAI Cycles in 2008.

Suction Cup Roof Mount Bike Rack from SeaSucker

Seasucker suction cup bicycle roof racks

SeaSucker makes it easy to get your bike from points A to B without having any permanent fixtures adorning (or weighing down) your car.

Using three suction cups to secure a fork-mount to e roof, the Talon model shown above is made of 3/16″ anodized aluminum to be strong enough to hold securely but still flex just slightly to accommodate the curve of most roofs. The Talon’s front section uses three 6″ vacuum suction cups that can work on the windshield or roof and one single suction cupped rear tire mount. SeaSucker says each cup is rated to 210 pounds. While I have no idea what amount of drag in pounds a bike creates at highway speeds, that seems like quite a bit when you add up the total of four suction cups (just remove that number plate!).

Bikerumor Pic Of The Day: Gobble Gobble!

IMG_8734” by Velogrrl, “Dave Knauff, the rider in the turkey costume, would run through the sandpit yelling ‘Gobble, Gobble’. When he’d hit the lip at the edge of the sandpit that was causing everyone to crash, he’d hit the ground and roll over still clipped into the bike, so the bike would be up in the air above him for a moment. It was pretty cool to watch. It happened at least twice so I have to think maybe he was doing it on purpose!” Photo taken at the Norhtbrook Swan Song CX race, part of the Chicago Cross Cup.

Hot SE Bikes Quad Fixed Gear Prototype Rocked by Marwin Ou

Just got this in from SE Bikes:

It was only a matter of time ‘till we put pen to paper & drafted up the first ever Quad Fixed frame. What you see here is #1 of one. Strictly prototype & still in the development stage. This frame was handed off to Marwin “The Wizard” Ou last night. Marwin will be riding & testing it on the streets & skateparks of the LBC in the coming months.

We have not yet decided if we will bring the Quad Fixed frame into SE’s 2012 line of bikes. So for now, just consider it our little pet project. If you like what you see, keep an eye out on the SE website and SE’s Facebook page for the frame’s progress.

New Pedal Pushers Club Reflective, Recycled, Organic Cycling Hoodie and New T-Shirts

Pedal Pushers Club, purveyor of cycling lifestyle gear, has just introduced this new hoodie made of blend of 55% post consumer recycled polyester and 45% organic cotton. Here’s their official blurb on it:

In an attempt to undo  the historical association between wearing reflective clothing and being known around the office as “the crazy bike commuter guy”, Pedal Pushers Club has begun selling an everyday, casual sweatshirt with exceptional reflective capabilities.   Under normal lighting the bicycle graphic looks and feels like a regular screen-print, however under direct lighting such as from a car, the print exhibits its reflective qualities.  Made from hyper-reflective 3M Scotchlite, the bicycle graphic acts as an excellent addition to wearing a regular blinky light or provides a good backup to help riders remain visible when they forget their lights at home or face a dead battery.

They’ve also got some cool new t-shirt designs, modeled by Tyler and Kristi from the Bikerumor World HQ after the break…

3T Adds Wide 720mm Extendo Carbon and Alloy Mountain Bike Handlebars

3T has just added the Extendo, an ultra-wide flat bar, 740 mm (29”) in width, with a 12° rearward sweep, to it’s mountain bike collection. The bar’s outer sections are 3mm eccentric to the central clamping section, so rotating them forwards or backwards in the stem produces a marked up- or down-sweep at the ends. It’s aimed at riders who need extra steering leverage to tackle extreme terrain. It’s available in three levels:

  • EXTENDO LTD High Modulus Carbon – £99.99 – 185g
  • EXTENDO TEAM Carbon – £89.99 – 225g
  • EXTENDO PRO Alloy – £39.99  – ??g

DeFeet’s New Hi-Vis, Day Glow Yellow Arm Warmers

DeFeet has some killer new technology coming out, and here’s the first of what we have to show you: Hi-Viz, day glow yellow Armskins arm warmers.

I rode these on a 60º day (with their Un-D-Shirt as a base layer) and they were perfect. They’re a blend of 49% CoolMax EcoMade, 47% Nylon, and 4% Lycra, wick really well and stay put much longer than most arm warmers despite not having any sort of fancy silicone or rubbery grippy stuff at the upper cuff.  They’re super bright, adding a bit of safety to your ride (every little bit helps), and they’re only $22. Good stuff.

Interbike 2010: One Ghost’s Colorful Candy Component Line

We saw some prototypes of One Ghost’s Candy Components‘ new Flapjack flat pedals just before Interbike, and he had the final production versions on hand along with a complete, rainbow colored collection of components.

Walking around the show with a giant gun case, founder David Meredith pulled me aside to show off the goods, including their Bighead headset, top caps, seatpost binders, DH handlebars and pedals.

All parts polished and anodized for a deep long lasting finish. Five standard colors and one limited edition finish are offered:
- Green Apple
- Purple Grape
- Sweet Magenta
- Tangerine
- Cyan Blue
- Black Chrome with gold graphics (not shown, this special “Ghost” edition costs more but the extra money is donated to a charity like 88 bikes.org or the US humane society)

Interbike 2010: One Ghost’s Carbon 29er Mountain Bike, Plus a Bit of DJ/4X

We first met One Ghost Industries‘ founder David Meredith at the Ashland, OR, Super-D where he was showing off some early versions of his Candy Components line, but there was no hint that this full carbon 29er was in the works. We met up in the halls of Interbike and grabbed a few shots and details on it, the complete Candy line (which we’ll cover on a separate post) and their split-top tube DJ bike.

Here’s what David said about the OG Carbon 29er:

“Full monocoque construction with a controlled layering to get the ride quality and weight we want. BB30 so we can put an eccentric adapter on it for single speed use or 1×10 (working with E-Thirteen on a set up for that for our complete bike). The frame is designed with ‘long and low geometry’ with long top tubes and low standover and short chainstays/rear center. It has a tapered internal head tube and our own full monocoque construction carbon fork (steerer to dropout) with tapered steer tube.”
