No, this isn’t the ridiculously light 2011 Scalpel, but he did have a new Flash 29er that he used to great effect thanks to the generous bike swap and outside support allowed by Mike at the race. That bike wasn’t around for photos, so we shot the Scalpel that he’s been winning races on all season…including the Breck Epic.

The fork is Cannondale’s Lefty Speed Carbon PBR with a Rockshox Monarch rear shock. Note the custom SimpleStrap from ByeKyle.

The feather sticker is from the Vision Quest race, which he won on this bike.

This is the fix that a lot of pros have used in the past to reduce the space between the bottom of their shoe and the Eggbeater’s non-platform. The new models have a larger diameter section outside of the clamps, and they’re offering rubbery bits to give riders the ability to customize the “fit” under the shoe. Judging by the spindle on these (and the no-longer-offered red spring), it looks like JB needs to upgrade.
