Landis Filing Whistle Blower Lawsuit Against Former Postal Service Team

Adding to the drama unfolding, Floyd Landis is reportedly filing a federal whistleblower suit against his former team, the U.S. Postal squad.

Two people briefed on the matter, who are remaining anonymous because the case is under seal, said Landis is claiming that team management was aware of the team’s widespread doping when they signed the sponsorship agreement with the Postal Service despite the contract clearly stating that any doping would constitute default of their agreement.

In May, Landis’s emails were leaked accusing Armstrong and other former teammates of doping. Of course, Armstrong has denied the allegations and called Landis’ credibility into question. The credibility, of course, is what has many people questioning Floyd’s motives for coming forward. Landis says he wanted to show the UCI and others just how easy it is to dope, however the whistleblower lawsuit will have skeptics saying he’s now in it for the money.

Landis filed his whistle-blower suit under the False Claims Act, the people with knowledge of the case said. Those suits give citizens the right and the financial incentive to hire their own lawyers and bring lawsuits on the government’s behalf. If the government reclaims any financial reward, the person who brought the suit is entitled to a percentage of the money.

Continued after the break…

Armstrong’s spokesman, Mark Fabiani, emailed this statement: “This news that Floyd Landis is in this for the money reconfirms everything we all knew about Landis.” Landis is “a serial liar, an epic cheater and a swindler. What remains a complete mystery is why the government would devote a penny of the taxpayers’ money to help Floyd Landis further his vile, cheating ambitions.”

The U.S. government may choose to join in whistleblower cases at its discretion, but thus far has not made a decision as to jump in on this one.
