Rockwell, NC, Driver Charged with Felony Hit & Run for Swerving into Subaru-Gary Fisher Team Members

Just months after Subaru-Gary Fisher rider Adam Little was struck and killed while riding in Charlotte, NC, several more members were hit while on a training ride.

On Friday, 21-year-old Daniel Burton Wilson II was charged with six counts of felony hit and run for veering left of center and hitting six cyclists on Wednesday.

Interviewed by the Salisbury Post, team rider Chris Harkey recounted how he saw a Nissan Pathfinder swerve into the group of riders in front of him, which included his wife (Lori Harkey) and her sister (Lisa Preslar), and saw bodies fly.  Two riders were hit directly, with one sliding across the hood and the other getting dragged under the car.  Four more riders then crashed into the vehicle.

Fortunately, no one was killed in the accident, but two riders were taken to the hospital and have undergone surgery and treatment.  Others were treated at the scene.  The rider who was dragged under the car was able to “jump” free as Wilson drove into a ditch to get around several other cyclists that tried to block his escape.  Remarkably, that rider suffered no apparent major injuries and was treated at the scene.

Another motorist followed Wilson who, along with riders at the scene, recorded his license plate number.  Police traced the tag and called Wilson’s father, who owned the vehicle.  Both his father and mother cooperated in locating Wilson, who turned himself in four hours later.  Wilson is currently free without bond until trial.

The Cabarrus County District Attorney’s Office is determining “if this guy was trying to intentionally run over the cyclists,” Sgt. G.A. Barger of the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office said, adding that he could face additional charges.

Read the full story here, with many more pics from the scene.  Just don’t bother with the comments, they’re the usual rants between motorists and cyclists except with particularly poor spelling and grammar.

Review: Specialized Arc II Optics

specialized-arc2-sunglasses-review09

Specialized has been creating their own line of optics for years. They continue to push the fashion/ function envelope with their innovative designs and features. I’ve recently been sporting their Arc II in small with the Adaptalite Photochromic lens.

Are they cool? Most definitely and they undoubtedly make you fast. You could have two flat tires, bar ends that face the ground, be pedaling with one leg, and riding a single-speed Huffy and your competition doesn’t stand a chance!

Oakley showed off the new Jawbone, which now comes in reflective silver.

Oakley had some cool new updates to their Jawbone and Radar lines on display at the Tour of California yesterday. We grabbed a sneak peek of the new offerings, which include limited edition reflective sliver frames as well as new lens and earpiece colors. The photo above shows the new Jawbones, with the  stunning new reflective finish on the frames. Oakley will also offer their popular Radar frames in the same reflective finish, along with two new lens and earpiece colors which come as a package with the new frames. Check out some close ups of the new frames and pictures of the lenses after the break.

Review: Giro Prolight Cycling Helmet

giro-pro-light-helmet-review15

BIKERUMOR REVIEW: Giro’s Prolight helmet made its re-introduction at last year’s Tour de France on a few select sponsored teams, and it became generally available this spring.  I’ve had a chance to check one out for the last two months, and I can sum it up by saying “You’re gonna want one of these.”

The qualifier to that remark is “if you’re a roadie or XC mountain biker.”

When it was first announced, the claimed weight was 175g.  I’m assuming the CPSC had some things to say about that, because the new claimed weight for a Medium is 195g…which is still insanely light.  My test model weighed slightly less than that, too.

In a nutshell, the Prolight uses more vents (25) than Giro’s top-of-the-line Ionos (21), and it costs $30 less ($200 vs. $230). Though they’re smaller holes, they use similar internal channeling to keep your head cool, and it does a great job of it.  Part of the gram shaving comes from their all-new RocLoc SL retention system, non-adjustable straps and a minimal chin clip.

Check out all the details and full review after the break…

2010 SSCXWC – Single Speed Cyclocross World Championship Dates Announced

sscxwc2010-seattle-single-speed-cyclocross-world-cup

Spring is in the air, which means we’re only 1 more season in the way of the best season…Cross Season. With this in mind the Washington United Single Speeders, LLC and Low Pressure Promotions, LLC are ready to announce the 2010 dates for the first non-PDX version of the Single Speed Cyclocross World Championship in Seattle, WA. The main event will take place Sunday October 24, 2010 at Pacific Raceways in Kent, WA and is being presented by Pabst Blue Ribbon, Stanley, a brand of PMI, and Raleigh America.

Returning this year is the qualifier event starting Saturday morning, October 23, 2010. This means we will be limiting the number of participants in the World Championships main event. So the qualifier is mandatory in order to secure a spot in the race on Sunday October 24th. We will be offering “repechage” opportunities during the many events planned on Saturday. Winning the MFG SS race earlier on Sunday will be the final qualifier. Times and locations for the qualifier events will be announced as the event approaches.

Online registration opens June 1, 2010 and will be posted on both the MFG Cyclocross and SSCXWC websites. The first 50 pre-registered racers will receive a limited edition SSCXWC t-shirt,  SSCXWC/Stanley mug, and a custom handmade number from Seattle bag maker Dank Bags. While not everyone will get to race in the World Championships, everyone who registers will be allowed to race in the MFG Series SS race. This guarantees
everyone the opportunity to get their race on.

For ongoing updates and complete details about the race and all the events taking place throughout the weekend of October 23 and 24, go to http://sscxwc.org.

Tech Bits, Cutaway Photos on Manitou Circus DJ Fork and Hayes Prime Disc Brakes

manitou-circus-dirt-jump-fork04

SEA OTTER CLASSIC 2010 – Hayes Bicycle Group, which owns Manitou, Hayes and Sun-Ringle had all their new goodies on display.  We showed you the hot new Sun-Ringle wheels at Interbike last year, and we’ve covered the launch and tech specs of the Circus DJ fork and Hayes Prime hydraulic disc brakes (in order: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5), so we took the opportunity to talk tech with them at Sea Otter and get a few updated details.

After the break, there are cutaway, internal photos of how the new Hayes Prime brakes work, but first, a few notes on the new Circus.

There are two models available, the Expert (left, with aluminum stanchions) and the Comp (chromoly stanchions).  The lowers and crown are identical, but the internals, controls and sliders are what make up the $50 price difference.
