Ag2r-La Mondiale Team Returns to Australia’s Tour Down Under

Ag2r La Mondiale, the only team to have competed at every edition of the Santos Tour Down Under, will bring a strong team to compete in the 2010 race in Adelaide.

Santos Tour Down Under Race Director, Mike Turtur, said that he is looking forward to the return of 2007 Tour Down Under champion Martin Elmiger.

“Elmiger started out strong in January finishing fourth overall at the 2009 Santos Tour Down Under,” said Mike Turtur.

“This set the scene for a solid effort all season, with Elmiger claiming a third place finish in the Monte Paschi Eroica and finishing twelfth in the Milan – San Remo.”

Ag2r La Mondiale has produced the most overall winners of the Santos Tour Down Under in the event’s history – Gilles Maignan (2000), Mikel Astarloza (2003), Simon Gerrans (2006) and Martin Elmiger (2007).

“Ag2r-La Mondiale will be a very competitive side at the 2010 event, fielding a team led by very experienced riders with key victories on the world stage in Elmiger and Dessel,” said Mike Turtur.

Cyril Dessel is a Tour de France stage winner, taking victory on the 16th stage in 2008 after being in a chase group for the majority of the day.

“Dessel is in the elite group of cyclists who can say they have worn the race leader’s yellow jersey at the Tour de France, which he achieved back in 2006.”

Ag2r-La Mondiale’s roster for the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under will be led by Team Manager Laurent Biondi (FRA) and include riders:

  • Martin Elmiger (SUI)
  • Cyril Dessel (FRA)
  • Blel Kadri (FRA)
  • Yuriy Krivtsov (UKR)
  • Rene Mandri (EST)
  • Anthony Ravard (FRA)
  • Ludovic Turpin (FRA)

More rider and team announcements will be issued over the coming weeks. The 2010 Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 17-24 January 2010. For more information, visit www.tourdownunder.com.au.

Former Asheville Firefighter Gets Four Months For Shooting At Cyclist

Back in July, Asheville firefighter Charles Alexander Diez yelled from his moving vehicle at Alan Simons as Simons rode his bicycle along Tunnel Road pulling his son in a bike trailer and his wife following.

Diez apparently yelled that Simons was risking the child’s life by riding their bikes on that road, and when Simons approached the vehicle, Diez pulled out his gun.  As Simons walked away, Diez’s gun went off and hit Simons’ helmet, causing damage to his eardrum but otherwise (and fortunately) leaving him relatively unharmed.

On Thursday, Diez pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill (the original charge was first attempted degree murder, but was changed because the event was not premeditated) and was sentenced to four months in prison, which could be increased to 15 to 27 months based on Diez’s behavior during the next 30 months.

Superior Court Judge James Downs said mitigating factors, including Diez’s excellent work history and lack of prior criminal records, was the basis for the lenient sentence.  Diez says he only intended to fire a warning shot, that he felt threatened because Simons reached into his car and grabbed his shirt (a claim Simons denies).

Fun NY Times Article on Campus Cycling and Identity

NY TIMES: On the hour they come, great clouds of cyclists pulsing between classes along the street called Serra Mall — the main axis of Stanford University — like so many slowly charged particles in a physics experiment.

Campus is flat enough — and large enough — and the weather so brilliant that nearly everyone cycles. And whoever all these cyclists are, as individuals, their individuality is burnished by the bikes they ride and by the way they ride them. It’s as though the bikes are only partly transportation, as though they were really machines for differentiation.

And what aids the differencing is that few people wear helmets, and everyone is wearing ordinary clothes — none of the sleek and gaudy costumes you see on cyclists pumping through the peninsular hills and whistling down Sand Hill Road to the Caltrain station. They are themselves on wheels.

There is a deeply pleasing randomness about the campus cyclists… read the rest at NYTimes.com

The Cheetah: Making Recumbent Bicycles Cool (and Scary)

guepardo-cheetah-bicycle-1

Industrial designer Pablo Lopez from firm DIBRUTAL came up with the Pardo, short for guepardo (Spanish for cheetah.) Designed for Innovar, an Argentinian innovations contest, it’s a recumbent of sorts in that you are mostly horizontal and there are pedals. That’s where the similarities end.

guepardo-cheetah-bicycle-2

The rider lies prone, face down, and pushes on the pedals simultaneously…like doing a frog leap…to propel the bike forward. Not content just to make these pretty concept renderings, Lopez actually built one! See it, and a usage diagram, after the break…
