2010 Felt Time Trial and Triathlon Bicycles

2010_felt_da

The 2010 Felt Time Trial and Triathlon bicycles are wind-tunnel developed and boast having the “fastest UCI-legal bike in the world.” At the top of the 2010 line, the Felt DA (above) has won countless professional road races, Ironman triathlons and amateur events worldwide. Design innovations include the Bayonetâ„¢ 2 Steering System, which effectively moves the fork’s steerer outside the frame and increases steering stiffness by 60 percent, a front-wheel-conforming downtube and aerodynamic seattube-conforming seatpost, which also reduce wind drag.

The DA has a Felt Tri Specific UHC-Nano Ultra Hybrid Composite Modulus Modular carbon fiber frame w/ 3KP finish. Full aero tubeset w/ front & rear wheel recesses, internal cable routing, and forged horizontal dropouts. The Felt Bayonet II fork has carbon blades, dropouts, crown & external steerer w/ the Felt 1 bearing compression device.

All of the 650c and 700c TT and Tri bicycles (except the S32) have the same geometry. Felt currently uses three types of its own design-specific blends of carbon fiber: UHC-Nano, UHM and HM. Read more on these materials below in the Technology section.

TECHNOLOGY

Felt currently uses three types of its own design-specific blends of carbon fiber: UHC-Nano, UHM and HM.

UHC-Nano
UHC-Nano frames maximize the amount of Ultra High Modulus material that can be used. With most carbon bicycle frames, standard epoxy resin is used as a binder to hold the individual fibers together in their desired locations and orientations. Felt’s Nano Tech is anything but standard. It enhances the performance of the frame at the molecular level of the resin with a stronger bond between the individual fibers.

This system results in improved impact strength, but it also enhances the performance characteristics of the bike. How? By giving Felt engineers more options. With improved strength and impact resistance, they can use more of the Ultra High material to add stiffness without the frame becoming too fragile. The thinner walls, improved stiffness and snappy ride quality are all results of the Nano Tech resin.

With this material, Felt could have chosen to shave a few more grams off the UHC-Nano frames, but with the bikes already so light that their pro team mechanics sometimes have to add weight just to meet the UCI’s minimum competition weight, Felt instead increased the impact strength and stiffness. So their stiffest and lightest frame is now that much more durable.

Ultra High Modulus (UHM)
The raw fibers used in Felt’s Ultra High Modulus frames allow Felt engineers to meet their stringent requirements for rigidity and strength with less material than the High Modulus frames. The highly refined threads of UHM typically have a higher fiber to resin ratio, which results in a lightweight, lively frame that’s perfect for competitive riders and racers.

Similar to the way metallic frames gain ride quality and liveliness with thinner tube walls, the UHM fibers allows their designers to use incredibly thin-walled tubing. The end result? UHM frames are 20% lighter while remaining just as stiff and strong.

Working with UHM fibers does present certain engineering challenges. For instance, a fiber with more stiffness and strength is also more brittle. Though capable of sustaining massive loads, these fibers are less tolerant of tight-radius bends in the manufacturing process. So thoughtful design is critical. Felt engineers are careful to include as few tight bends as possible, which not only prevents the fibers from fracturing during manufacturing but also guarantees that the material yields the lightest possible frame.

High Modulus (HM)
Felt’s High Modulus clearly illustrates why carbon fiber is ideal for performance bicycle frames. Consider the facts: It’s eight times stronger than 3/2.5 titanium, more than three times stiffer than 6061 aluminum and less than one-fourth the density of steel. Moreover, it can be formed into a wide variety of shapes and exhibits nearly infinite fatigue life.

HM frames have that signature Felt feel and are perfect for riders who want a performance bike that’s strong enough to lasts for years. Even the least expensive carbon fiber road bike in Felt’s 2010 line, the F5 SL, uses premium grade high-modulus fibers for its sleek frame and all-carbon fork. The materials used in this entry-level carbon road racer are on par with many manufacturers’ top-of-the-line models.

Folks, you often say something like “Hit ‘more’ to find out more.” However, I never *see* a “More” button or link on your page.

It’s true I run NoScript/FF, but if indeed that is at the crux of the problem, I imagine other users do as well; so could you actually place a hyperlink in text so I can get the full measure of your great info?

Thanks in advance.

Editor - 09/15/09 - 4:13pm

If you’re looking at our posts from the homepage, then on the posts where there’s “more” to read, which is sometimes referred to information that’s “after the break”, you’ll see this:

…just below the last sentence and above Permalink | Email | Views

However, if you’re clicking on a link from Twitter or another website that’s linking to us and going directly to the full article, you won’t see the (more…) link because you’re already looking at the “more” info. It only applies on the main pages, not the individual post pages, but there’s no way to separate that out, and sometimes we just like to make it painfully obvious that there’s hidden cycling treasure lurking below…

PS. For an example of this, just go to our homepage and look at the abbreviated Felt TT post you commented on and you’ll see what we mean.

Hello,

In your website I saw the following:

Does it mean that the Felt DA frame with all the above specs costs Malaysian Ringit 8.999 (about USD 2.700), is that correct?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Rudy van Bork
