New Ellsworth Mountain Bike Wheels and Project Pink Jerseys

2009 ellsworth mountain bike wheelset with all mountain rims hubs and spokes using a proprietary alloy extruded in house for the hoops

Tony Ellsworth himself was on hand at Sea Otter to give us the rundown on his new All-Mountain wheelset.  They use a 405g rim extruded in-house from a proprietary alloy.  The hub is his design, but made by “a major hub manufacturer” to their spec.  It uses a 3-pawl / 24 point engagement and has standard 6-bolt disc mounts.  Front and rear are three-cross, straightpull spokes.

They also had their new Project Pink and Rainforest Green jerseys on display, modeled here by Ellsworth pro downhiller Neven Steinmetz on left.  The Rainforest jersey at right is shown off by Señor Ellsworth.

Hmm…double crown fork but no direct mount stem.

Now, about those wheels.  Tight graphics surround the 29mm wide rim.  The curved rim profile is disc only.

The AM wheelset weighs in at 1575g, and their XC wheelset (not shown) weighs in at 1499g.  Pretty darn light considering the Mavic Crossmax SLR Disc has a claimed weight of 1520g per set!

The XC version uses 24 spokes and a lighter hub with quadruple butted 2.2/2.0/1.6/2.0 spokes.

The AM set uses 32 spokes, also quadruple butted at 2.2/2.0/1.8/2.0, and both will offer multiple axle configurations:

  • XC: QR or 15mm axle
  • AM: 20mm standard w/ adapters for 15mm or QR
  • Rears come standard or with 10mm.
  • X12 on the way…stay tuned for more on that

Some shiny skewers round out the package.  $899 MSRP.
