Close Up: Giant Rabobank Team Replica Road Bike

Giant Bicycles Rabobank team replica road bike carbon fiber race cycling

Giant’s Rabobank team replica, which we announced in a previous post (with more specs), uses a full Dura-Ace drivetrain and Shimano PRO cockpit components.  Wheels are Dura-Ace carbon. The frame uses an SL carbon build up, giving it a different frame shape than the non-SL TCR Advanced road bikes, most notably with a less aero-shaped seat tube and sort of reverse curve behind the headtube, which you can see compared in that aforementioned previous post. Click the images to enlarge.

The downtube is big and square, and unlike the TCR Advanced, this one gets an integrated seatpost.

Lance Armstrong Cleared to Race Tour de France

In what shall be called an obviously intelligent marketing decision that has media companies around the world rejoicing (including us), The French Doping Association has cleared Lance Armstrong to race in July’s Tour de France.

They have agreed to drop all accusations and not take any action, saying that Armstrong did not violate any rules during the now infamous testing procedure.

His blood and urine tests all came back clean. Heading out for a ride myself and sending this update from the mobile, so more details will follow…

Vote to Name Kona’s New Mountain Bike

kona-namebikecontestKONAWORLD - Sure, naming our new all-mountain jewel may have stumped us, but you, oh glorious Kona people, had no problem. After hundreds of emails, our international selection committee has weeded through more than 3,000 names submitted (thank you, thank you) to the following four:

Tanuki – Literally, the Tanuki is a Japanese raccoon-like dog or badger with monster nuts. Enough said. Japanese folklore, however, backs up this name suggestion by explaining how the legendary Tanuki is reputed to be mischievous and jolly, a master of disguise and shape shifting. Basically, our new bike in a nut shell (pardon the pun). Fun, adaptability and super oversized cojones.

Magus – Refers to a sorcerer or member of a priestly caste from ancient Persia, which fits nicely with the Magic Link outfitted, 2-bikes-in-1 supernatural powers of this new bike.

King Kilauea – Located on Hawaii’s big island, Kilauea is currently the most active volcano on the Earth. Getting it done, day in, day out, hot burning magma style. The name has a nice fit with the volcano and Hawaiian themes used at Kona over the years.

Cadabra – It’s been used for centuries, by shamans through to modern day magicians. An abbreviation of the power laden “abracadabra,” that again, fits nicely with the Magic Link capabilities of this bike.

So, the time has come for you – dedicated Kona riders – to help choose the name of our new Magic Link six-inch travel bike. CLICK HERE TO VOTE ON A NAME TODAY.

Every four days, based on your votes for the names you want to win, we’ll drop the least popular name until we arrive at our winner, who will get a sick new Tanuki, Magus, King Kilauea or Cadabra for their tagging efforts.

Other prizes include a burly, crusier-style AfricaBike, new men’s Freddy Jacket, set of Wah Wah pedals and a Kona men’s or women’s riding jersey.

Thor Hushovd Will Skip the Giro d’Italia

PRESS RELEASE: The Cervélo TestTeam announced yesterday that the nordic viking Thor Hushovd will skip the Giro d’Italia.

After a full spring program including stage win at Tour of California, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and third places in both Milano-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix, Hushovd is taking some time to rest and to train, giving his full focus to the Tour de France in July.

“I had a hard classic season and need a good break, said Hushovd. After that, I will start building up my shape slowly for my next big goal, the Tour de France. For the Giro, I would have had to be ready right from the beginning of the race, but I haven’t had enough time to prepare.

Hushovd made the decision in consultation with Cervélo TestTeam’s Sports Director, Jean Paul van Poppel, “with the Tour ahead, we decided that it was in the teams’ and my best interests to adjust our plans, said Hushovd. Instead, I’ll do Volta a Catalunya and the Tour de Swiss with my main lead-out man, Brett Lancaster. This way we can train and work together on our lead-out.”

April 23rd, Pre-Selection of the Cervélo TestTeam for the Giro d’Italia:
Philip Deignan (IRL), Simon Gerrans (AUS), Volodymir Gustov (UKR), Jérémy Hunt (GBR), Ted King (USA), Ignatas Konovalovas (LTU), Daniel Lloyd (GBR), Joaquin Novoa (ESP), Serge Pauwels (BEL), Hayden Roulston (NZL), Carlos Sastre (ESP)

New Giro Bicycle Helmets, Sunglasses and Lenses

soc09-giroshades_01

BIKERUMOR.com 2009 SEA OTTER CLASSIC COVERAGE: The Giro Cymbal, one of two new style models shown at Sea Otter, is a women’s frame.  The Fader, below left, is a new men’s model.  Prices for these range from $90 to $130 depending on lens options, from basic to polarized.  What sets Giro shades apart is their exclusive sunglass relationship with Zeiss.  Yes, that same Zeiss whose name adorns Sony camera lenses and other high end optics.

The polarization used is an injection, not a laminate, so it won’t rub off.  What was interesting to learn is that Giro sends their designs to Zeiss, then Zeiss tells them if they can create a lens that’ll fit.  Sometimes, the designs have to change in order to allow the lens to meet Zeiss’ standards for optical clarity.

Giro had several other new products, including the Garmin-Slipstream team color Filter model, and two new lense colors: Orange and Yellow.  The Orange has 67% light transmission, the Yellow has 56%.  The pics above show how they look in the bright sun (click to enlarge).  Surprisingly, the orange seemed much brighter, but they were both a bit much for direct light.  They’re intended for cloudier days or under the trees when mountain biking.  We’ve got a set with the Orange lenses on review…

New Formula R1 Mountain Bike Disc Brakes

soc09-formula_01

BIKERUMOR.com 2009 SEA OTTER CLASSIC COVERAGE: Formula’s R1 hydraulic disc brake isn’t brand new, it’s been out for a bit, but it seemed to be on just about every lightweight bike vendors were displaying. And it won Olympic Gold. And it was developed using Downhill technology…but it’s for XC.

The R1 uses a forged body (notice the whole thing’s one piece, not two halves bolted together) with 22mm pistons, which helps it offer powerful braking despite its diminutive size and weight.  The entire system is 270g per wheel.  Even the brake pads were designed to minimize weight…they use aluminum backings.

The red bits add a little flair to the otherwise matte black anodization on both the caliper and lever body.  The Master Cylinder is a new forged, one piece design with a high capacity reservoir.  The levers have a flip-flop clamp to ease installation, and they have dual bleed ports for easy on-the-bike bleeds.
