Wright Brothers Bicycle Shop offered as Hall of Fame Option

From CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Civic leaders in Dayton, Ohio, are offering the Wright brothers’ first bicycle store as a possible home to the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame.

The city is one of 11 under consideration for the hall, which was founded in 1987 is currently housed in Somerville, N.J.

Bill Brunner, the hall’s search committee chairman, says the organization is looking for a community that can provide support, draw in visitors and is bicycle friendly.

Wilber and Orville Wright were bicycle builders by trade who made the first airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C., in 1903. Their bicycle shop in Dayton is in disrepair, and local advocates see the bicycle hall of fame as a way to save the building.

Brunner says other cities being considered are Madison, Wis., and Davis, Calif.

Dave Zabriskie’s House Broken Into, Wiped Clean

Dave Zabriskie, who came in second in the recent Amgen Tour of California, had his house in Salt Lake City broken into last week and virtually all of his belongings stolen, including:

  • A black 2008 Subaru Outback, Utah plate A189NC
  • A black 2006 Toyota Scion, Utah plate 094VWM
  • A Sony 52-inch flat-screen TV
  • A Bose speaker/receiver system worth an estimated $15,000
  • Video game systems
  • Thirteen bicycles, including an Olympic time trial bike
  • Laptops and a hard drive.

Sherry Hamik, Dave’s mom, was quoted in the Deseret News as saying the value of the items taken is “massive.” “The bikes alone are about $10,000 apiece. That’s only the bikes. That’s not the cars or the things in the house. It’s astronomical.”

NA Handmade Bike Show Sees Record Registrations

A promotional postcard from Zullo. Click the image to enlarge.

With names such as De Rosa, Zullo, Serotta, Sachs, Calfee, Crumpton, Vanilla, Walker and De Salvo among the exhibitors, the world’s leading handmade bicycle show presents not only the greatest concentration of quality custom bicycles in the world this year, but in the five years of running the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS).

The show takes place this weekend at the Indiana Convention Center, Indianapolis, February 27 – March 1. Policy changes after last year’s show restricted entry to builders with product liability insurance, who had completed at least 50 frames or been in business for two years.

“It is always a risk to introduce a policy that raises the bar like this, but NAHBS is a show that presents the best of the best in bicycling, and to be true to this goal we needed to have only the more accomplished frame builders there,” said Don Walker, the founder and director of the show, a frame builder himself who runs Speedway Handmade Bicycle Works out of Speedway, Indiana.

GreenWheel Converts any Bicycle to Electric Power

GreenWheel is an all-in-one electric powered wheel being tested by MIT scientists.  It contains the motor, battery and electronics all inside the hub, with only the throttle having to be mounted on the bicycle’s frame.

They’re designing it to work with any bike frame with no modifications, and the unit cost is targeted at a couple hundred dollars, making it hundreds of dollars less than competing electric bike mod kits.

The unit will give a typical bike a range of about 25 miles of pedal-free power, or double that if the rider pedals.  It can be recharged via pedaling or plugging it in.  The GreenWheel is also durable. The team estimates its range at 40,000 miles, or about eight years work of travel at an estimated 20 miles per business day.

“You’ll have to replace the bike before you replace the batteries,” Lin told Discovery News.
