Not long ago we found ourselves looking at another bare aluminum European trail bike, once again screaming prototype. This time though we had a chance not only to get full details on the bike and take some photos to share, but also to throw a leg over it and ride it hard down some familiar trails. The bike was at Rose Bike’s press launch in the Austrian Alps and is the final working prototype they have used to dial in the geometry of their upcoming carbon Pikes Peak. The standout of the bike is a unique trailside-adjustable suspension setup that lets you not only flip between two different geometries, but also independently swap between two different shock progression rates in about 20 seconds with a single wrench.

Drop in after the break to see how the ProGeo adjustment works, more details on the upcoming production model, and see how it does on the trail…

Trail Thrashing Review with Sweet Protection Bushwacker MIPS Helmet, Bearsuit Kneepads & more…

Sweet-Protection_All-Mountain-riding-gear_helmet-jersey-gloves-shorts-kneepads_Rose-Bikes_photo-by-Irmo-Keizer

With a couple months of hot and dry weather across Europe, we’ve spent the better part of this summer getting as much trail riding in as we could. It was something of an idea to stay in the forests out of the sun a bit, but also a chance to get back to my personal technical mountain biking roots. With a few extended lift-assisted trips in some proper mountains, it also has been a chance to do some product testing on some more Enduro-leaning products. One kit we reached to a lot has been a 2016 preview that found its way to us from Norway by Sweet Protection. With a basic protection setup including a MIPS helmet, knee pads, and a pair of new lightweight gloves, I’ve done my best to put them to the test without going so far as to smacking my head on the ground or into any trees (at least not very hard, although it came close a few times.) Matched up with a lightweight long sleeve jersey and an over-the-knee pair of shorts the Sweet Protection gear has been a solid pick whenever the trail gets rough and the descents long.

Hop past the break for the low-down on each piece and our thoughts after a couple of months of riding up, over, and down a few mountains…

Mondraker Ups the Enduro Ante with New Dune Carbon

Mondraker_Dune_Carbon_XR_headtube-teaser

Last year Mondraker made the jump to 27.5″ wheels on their popular aluminum Enduro bike the Dune, and now they are taking it one step further with the new Dune Carbon. The new bike builds on Mondraker’s recent carbon success, slotting in between last year’s 140mm all-mountain Foxy Carbon, and early this year’s new 205mm Summun Carbon downhill bike that we checked out at the World Cup in Leogang. The new Dune Carbon borrows from both, combining the lightness and stiffness of the Foxy with the beefed up suspension layout and hardware, plus the adjustable geometry of the Summun.

Jump past the break for more details on the carbon enduro options and a closer look at the new frame…

Bionicon Adds New Raw Finish Edison EVO, and more

Bionicon_Edison_EVO_enduro_27-5inch_650b_mountain_bike_raw_aluminum_frame_finish_NBS_on-snow

As spring nears and we are dreaming of snow melting from trails we just got word from Bionicon that they are now delivering the new 2015 Edison EVO, which we tested last fall, to the first customers. In a pleasant update of giving consumers what they want, Bionicon tells us that they were getting some feedback that the neon orange and yellow paint schemes were too loud and so made a running decision to offer a low-key Raw frameset as an option. The raw frames are sanded and clear coated to protect the frames and get very minimal branding. If you are interested in a less more subdued finish, the Raw bikes will be available with the next production batch in May.

Bioinicon also announced a new lower cost option for buyers making advanced purchases, and some new suspension options. Hop past the break for more details and a couple more pics…

Limited Edition: 25 years of Shimano SPDs and Shoes

Shimano_25Years_of_SPD_Pedals_and_Shoes

It has been 25 years since Shimano first introduced their M737 mountain bike clipless pedal, and together with their M100 shoe, SPDs set the benchmark that all modern mountain bike pedals have been measured against. With Shimano Pedaling Dynamics, Shimano has since developed pedals that are lighter, better in the mud, and now adapted to everything from commuters and spinning classes to World Cup cross country and downhill racing. At the same time the cleat interface became the standard that the mountain bike cycling shoe industry has built itself on, as legions of other pedal makers have brought out alternatives.

To celebrate the SPD, Shimano is now releasing a 25th anniversary limited edition 5-series pedal and trail shoe combo, highlighting how the technology has evolved and both pedals and shoes have become specialized over the years. Join us after the break for a look at the shoes and pedals and to see how far they’ve come.

Weekend Test and Company Tour: Bionicon Edison EVO Enduro Claws Its Way Up and Bombs Downhill

Bionicon_Edison_EVO_enduro_27-5inch_650b_mountain_bike_orange_on-trail_descend-mode

Early this fall we took some time out to head to Bionicon’s home base in the south of Germany on the Tegernsee, a lake where Bavaria backs up into the mountains, to try out their newest Enduro bike on the terrain it was designed for. Our visit also gave us a chance to spend some time on and off the bike with the passionate engineers who developed their uniquely linked front and rear air suspension systems. They showed us around on the trails and in their headquarters where all of their bikes and suspensions systems are designed and assembled. Plus, we got a bit of the story of the development of their bikes and where they were focusing next.

Follow me past the jump for a look inside the company and hands-on with the tech, as well as some of our impressions and pictures from riding both their 26″ and 27.5″ Edison EVO enduro bikes up some of the steepest gravel roads passable and down some of the steepest and most technical singletrack we’ve ever pedaled to the top of…

EB14: New Stevens Whaka 140 Enduro, Arcalis Disc Aero Road, and Super Prestige CX Update

Stevens_Whaka_ES_140mm_aluminum_enduro_mtb_complete

Stevens bike introduced several new bikes at Eurobike from some fancy touring and commuting bikes to e-bikes, but a couple jumped out at us. First the 140mm Whaka above is a nice looking 4-bar enduro bike that offers a pretty broad range of affordability in an aluminum platform. Then there was an aero disc-brake road bike called the Arcalis that Stevens claims to actually be a comfortable, almost endurance type bike. Lastly as euro cross season approaches and the top riders are soon to be making their way back from Cross Vegas, some updates to the World Cup level Super Prestige look to make it even more capable on the race circuit.

Hop past the break for some full-on details…

EB14: One Ride Review of Ghost’s 27.5” 130mm Riot LT Enduro Green Machine, Plus Nivolet 8 LC Disc Road

Ghost_Riot_LT_8_LC_650b_130mm_carbon_enduro_MTB_demo_day_suspension_detail  Ghost_Riot_LT_8_LC_650b_130mm_carbon_enduro_MTB_demo_day_linkage_detail

Ghost bikes had their new 27.5″ carbon enduro bike at Eurobike’s Demo Day for test rides, and we took the chance to hop on and try to give it a bit of a workout on some decidedly flat terrain. Thankfully in addition to nice forest roads and a bit of hidden singletrack, there was a pretty respectable test course for mountain bikes that made up for lack of elevation with plenty of berms, jumps, rock gardens, log piles , and even a pump track. We had the Riot LT set a bit softer than usual to get a feel for the plushness of the suspension with a hope of getting towards the reportedly progressive last 1/5 of it travel.

Bounce past the break to see what we thought of the bike, plus details of its Riot brethren and a pretty dialed looking disc road bike we found hiding in the back of their setup inside the show.
