Roundup: Small but mighty lights by Portland Design Works, Bontrager, & Cateye

If you’re not using a light every time you ride on the road – you should. I think I speak for a lot of riders when I say that in years past I didn’t give much thought to riding with lights during the day. Now though, after too many stories of near misses or worse, I can’t leave the house without one. The good news is that modern lights make you far more visible to other traffic, even during the day. They’ve also gotten a lot smaller while maintaining impressive battery life – and in this case, every one of these lights is rechargeable. No one wants to invest a small fortune in coin cell batteries.

This is by no means a definitive list, but it is simply a group of lights that were sent to us for testing. Split between front and rear lights, Bontrager, Cateye, and Portland Design Works prove that lights don’t have to be big to be mighty…

Review: Poler One Man Tent is big & roomy, but a bit heavy

Poler One Man Tent review

A while back, I joined Blackburn for one of their adventure camps where we rode in, camped and rode out. We journalists had it easy – our camping gear was shuttled in for us. But the new Rangers for that year? They packed it all in and out on their own. We still had to pitch our tents, though, and for that they provided us with the Poler One Man Tent…

Bikerumor Holiday Gift Ideas: Trey’s Wish List

2016-holiday-wish-list-20160304_214734

Another year has passed and it’s been an interesting one to say the least. While there are few parts of my life that don’t involve bikes, I seem to enjoy them more and more as the years roll on. This year started off with hosting a slumber party with 9 girls… solo, taking a last minute trip across the globe to ride bikes and do other cool stuff, taking my 7-year-old to urgent care to get her first ever (face) stitches after her first “real” bike crash, to getting to build the “World’s Funnest Bike”.

Regardless, the above pics is from one of my favorite past times of cruising the bazaar street markets in foreign countries… and it sorta had some Christmas-y colors in it. Now go check out my holiday loot list after explaining to your boss what the heck you’re looking at…

Review: Jet Roll XX – Premium Handmade Bicycle Tool Roll

jetrollxxreview2016-5

Jet Roll is a fresh take on the classic cyclist’s tool roll. But rather than an old sock stuffed with the essentials and lashed to one’s saddle, the Jet Roll is designed to be a convenient and stylish way of carrying the essentials on your ride; spare tube, tire levers, multi-tool, Co2 inflator, etc. JET – as in Just Enough Tools – offer a variety of tool rolls in different sizes, materials and colors, catering to road, MTB, gravel, tubular tires and large folding tires.

Hand made in the USA by avid cyclist, Stephen Cruz, the idea of Jet Roll came to fruition when Stephen desired a simple method of carrying just enough stuff to fix a flat, or make a minor mechanical adjustment during his rides. The aesthetics of a saddle bag didn’t sit well with Stephen, and the idea of stuffing tools and spare tubes into his jersey pockets was less than ideal. Click on through to read our review of the heavy-duty Jet Roll XX…

Winter Maintenance: Cleaning, protecting & lubing the most neglected bikes along w/ some semi-pro tips

muc-off-park-winter-mtnc-2

If you’re reading this right now, your bike is dirty. Let’s face it, except for those of you that make your bed every morning, wash the dishes after a light healthy breakfast and disinfect your chain after each ride (truth… best friend and former roommate), you probably owe your bike a really good, deep cleaning. When I received the Ultimate Bike Care Kit from Muc-Off, and what has to be the most robust chain cleaning device ever created from Park Tool, I said… “it’s time”.

Knowing I might be judged, I decided anyway that this would be a good time to delve a little into some winter maintenance tips while tending to an embarrassingly overdue cleaning of my bike. Check out the before and after pics as a result of the Muc-Off and Park Tool’s help as well as some handy semi-pro tips and items I threw in for good measure. I’d love to learn more so be sure to add your maintenance tricks and tips in the comments…

Review: Mountainsmith has so many ways to keep post-ride bevs chilled

mountainsmith-cooler-tube-sling-style-review01

Between two different sixer capable options and a giant two-case swallowing roll top, Mountain Smith has post ride refreshments down cold.

Above, the Sling Cooler holds a six pack of cans for near term consumption. There’s no room for ice packs if you’re taking full advantage of its space, so think standing alongside the cyclocross course and heckling or manning the handup station. For longer term chilling, there’s the standard six pack cooler cube or the massive Roll Top Cooler…

kuat-nv-2-0-hitch-rack-review-car-element-2

Küat has always been easy to spot. When they first rolled onto the scene, the Küat NV was the rack that everyone seemed to want. It had unique style, unique features, and a sleek design. Since then, other manufacturers have been catching up, but now Küat is back with the NV 2.0. In addition to building on the iconic style that set it apart in the first place, the new rack was built to be better in almost every way…

Review: Lensbaby Circular 180+ Lens for GoPro Cameras

lensbabyreview2016-1

Lensbaby is a manufacturer of award-winning DSLR and mirrorless camera lenses, enabling creative effects for inventive photographers. The company was founded in 2004 by Craig Strong. Tired of the same old perspectives offered by stock camera lenses, Craig joined an old Speed Graphic lens with a shortened shop vacuum hose to create a unique photographic viewpoint completely different from anything available in a regular DSLR lens. Craig’s prototype inspired the original Lensbaby lens.

With the advent of small action cameras such as the GoPro, Craig looked at creating a lens that would capture immersive footage with a unique perspective. Thus, the Circular 180+ lens was born. The Circular 180+ lens creates fully circular fisheye video and images. Continue reading “Review: Lensbaby Circular 180+ Lens for GoPro Cameras”
