Back in December, we introduced you to Bouwmeester Composites, bringing a new way of thinking to the world of carbon fiber enduro rims with their single-walled Tammar V4.8.  The technology and story were impressive, so we got our hands on a set for a long term review.

How To Build A NAHBS Bike – Part 6: Paint, Decals and Show!

The final step in bringing a bike to NAHBS is to give it a nice coat of paint, put it together, and get it to the show. For our project Matter BeneFat, form followed function so we covered it in a nice coat of matte black with some nice accent stickers. Plenty of the gorgeous bikes to be show there are covered in thousand dollar paint jobs, but in the case of this project bike, it has to look good, but also look OK when covered in a bit of dirt.

Owner Collin Schaafsma took the finished frame down to Spectrum Powder Works for the cosmetic coating. Take a look inside to see the progression…

First Ride: Wraith’s new U.S. made Paycheck cyclocross bike

When it comes to nice steel bikes, there has always been a divide between the Asian-made frames at an affordable price point, and the USA made frames that typically cost three times more than the imports. Wraith is a new company that wants to challenge that standard, and offer good quality American made frames at a reasonable cost.

Offered at $1,350 including a full carbon fork, it brings the cost of an Ohio-welded Columbus Life and Zona steel within reach for most of the buyers that would typically choose an imported frame (without fork) around the $600-$700 price point.

The greatest part about the Paycheck is that while it is affordable, there are no cut corners. In fact there are even some pretty cool, unique features.  Take a look past the jump to see how it looks at first glance and first ride….

Home Workshop Series – Part 5 – The “Non-Standard” Tools

Having been a mechanic in other industries, it is a bit strange that cyclists are so attached to only purchasing and using tools made by bicycle tool companies. There are lots of great tools out there that may do the job better, cheaper, or different than the more specialized tools available from Park, Pedros, Lezyne or other cycling-specific tool companies.

One thing we all agree on, everyone should get a simple ratchet and socket set. Available for insanely low prices at places like Harbor Freight or other discounters, they are a great tool to have around, and most bicycle-specific fitments such as bottom bracket tools will have a fitment to be driven by a standard 3/8″ ratchet.

The Efneo Bicycle Gearbox Crank Hits Indiegogo, Puts 3 Speeds Up Front And Internal

Back in October, we showed you Efneo, a company out of Poland trying to bring a planetary gearbox crank to market. They have finally gotten the crank to crowdfunding on Indiegogo, and amazingly have already reached more than 1/3 of their goal in just 3 days.

Internal transmissions can be a love it or hate it idea for cyclists, but they are an excellent option for more casual cyclists, and the Efneo is created for these riders. Riding through a city, coming to many stop signs, and then taking off from each one, it takes time to train your mind to downshift your bike before each stop, and many casual users end up trying to take off again in a hard gear. The beauty of most internal drivetrains, and the Efneo, is that it can be downshifted without moving.

The other thing that sets the Efneo apart is a decently low price. Starting at just $220 during the campaign, it is considerably less expensive than say, the Truvativ Hammerschmidt, and still less than the similarly designed FSA Metropolis.

How To Build A NAHBS Bike – Part 5: Selecting All The Right Components

When building your dream bike, everyone has a tendency to simply pick all of the most expensive gear in existence. While it is a show bike too, I am making sure it is purpose built for riding. NAHBS can be a place of bikes that start at $10,000, so this bike which will come in around $6k retail might just be the most affordable on the show floor. And that is because it is made to be ridden.

In this article, we go through all of the components chosen for this build, and the reasons why.

The first product chosen was the Rockshox Bluto RL. Truly pushing the envelope for fat bikes, the Bluto is the only legitimate suspension fork, and it is really changing how the builders themselves start to create fat bike models. Even though it goes to 120mm of travel, and this bike is going to be made for getting rad, I stuck with 100mm to keep the front end from getting too high.

Fyxation’s Blackhawk Carbon Fiber Fat Bike Gets The Milwaukee Brand Off Road

Fyxation, born in Milwaukee, WI with the fixie movement. They haven’t just been on that pavement the whole time though. The winters can get pretty snowy and nasty in the great white north, so they moved on to a mountain bike that can be ridden throughout the snow season.

The Blackhawk is a carbon fiber, suspension corrected fat bike with a 197mm rear end, and can run either 26×5″ or 29×3″ tires.

Although the Blackhawk looks and smells like a fat bike, the guys at Fyxation call it a four season trail bike, and they ride it all year long. Take a look after the jump for the details…

Part One of our Road Tubeless series seemed to spur a lot of discussion, especially around the statement that a Road Tubeless standard does not exist. Most of us believe if a product says “Road Tubeless” on the side, it will work with other items that say the same.

Reader’s Rides: The XTR Di2 Hacks Have Begun With Julian Da Silva’s Jamis

XTR Di2 is just starting to hit shops, and with it, we have the beginning of riders modifying their rides for internal electronic capability. Julian Da Silva from Alex Bicycles in Coral Springs, FL took to putting a few holes in his Jamis Dakota D29 Team.

Julian told us “I wanted to show you guys one of my recent builds since you guys like to see them. This is a 2015 Jamis Dakota D29 Team but modified the frame for internal routing of the Shimano XTR M9050 Di2 system. As usual I try to keep everything clean and hidden, it was challenge with the rear chain stay routing the cable thru it, but managed to succeed. Possibly one of my favorite bikes I’ve built, fast, fun and quite comfortable.”
