They say one is the loneliest number, but if you have your bike with you – who cares? Every rider doesn’t need to be able to carry two, three, or four bikes, so RockyMounts is adding a new rack to the mix. The MonoRail Solo is just that – a hitch mounted tray rack that is designed to carry just one bike.

Using the same rack design as other RockyMounts products like the standard MonoRail, the MonoRail Solo uses a ratcheting wheel fork for the front, a flip up wheel support, and a simple ratchet strap for the rear wheel. Able to accommodate tires up to 5″, the rack will fit bikes with 20″ to 29″ wheels, and up to a 48″ wheelbase. It’s also strong enough to support heavy eBikes, yet the rack is super light thanks to the single tray design at 25lbs.

However, should you decide somewhere down the line that you really would like to be able to carry two bikes, Rocky Mounts has you covered. Pop off the black end cap above, and you can install the MonoRail Single Bike Add-on which adds another tray for an additional $169.95.

Should you need to pop the trunk, the MonoRail tilts down with a tug of the blue lever – even with a bike loaded. It also fits 1 1/4″ and 2″ receivers out of the box and cinches tight with an anti wobble hitch bolt.

The rack also ships with a lock for the hitch pin as well as a cable lock for the bikes – both of which use the same key. The MonoRail Solo should be available mid-November, and it will run $279.

I’ll stick with my 1Up

I’m not seeing what this offers over my 1UP rack. And for the price – you may as well get a 1up. They have incredible customer service, a completely modular design where you can upgrade or replace any parts. If you’re going to charge close to $300 for a rack, it better have as many features as the 1up

Depends on the configuration. If you want a rack that has a comparable weight capacity and will handle a fatbike with 4″ tires, and of course get t he same color (black) you have to step up to the heavy duty 1up, pay premium for black and buy separate adapters for fat tires. Total price from 1up is $433 vs $279. And then you still don’t have a lock for the rack or for the bike.

the Rockymounts is a better choice for bikes with carbon rims, because the bike sits much more higher above the catback exhaust. It seems to be higher than the 1up. And melted carbon rims due to exhaust line being too close is a no go

Nice rack, but what about transporting a solo bike with fenders/mudguards? Neither this, 1UP, or Yakima/Thule’s single bike carriers can do this due to the rack clamping on the front wheel.

I have a Stromer ST1 60# E-bike that comes with factory installed full rear fender and a 50% sized front fender making a wheel clamp useless. It needs a clamp that locks onto the top cross bar while simply tying down the two wheels. This almost, but not quite, meets that requirement. Also single bike only, under 30 pound hitch weight, 1-1/4 receiver and will be carried by a 2017 Prius. So far the manufacturers have not paid much attention to E-bikes especially single user versions.

I would like to see some options that would work on an RV and for a single ebike. Being that ebikes are heavier to lift, a built in ramp would also be nice–my wish list!
