Until now Strava has been exclusively a sport activity tracking site. And while that hasn’t slowed it from dominating with ideas like ‘Strava or it didn’t happen’, constant oneupmanship on local segments, and extensive KOM hunting & sniping, there was room to get more social. Now Active Life will allow Strava athletes to share more of their life off the bike, via posts not based on a specific activity.

Strava Posts, active life sharing in your activity feed

Strava users can now write more Facebook-style posts sharing stories around their life, photos between rides, and even share other content like training tips & general interest articles.

Strava Posts, active life sharing in your activity feed Tips on RecoveryTogether Strava is rolling out a new feed visible on both desktops & their mobile apps that gives a brooder look at the new Active Life posts, as well as a more immersive look at typical sport activities with mapping & linked photos.

We already saw a preview of how this would work with Strava’s curated pro athletes this past spring. Teasing the new format those select 36 athletes have been writing stories, and essentially dropping their blogs into out activity feeds. Now you can share the same with your friends & followers.

Strava Posts, active life sharing in your activity feed Ride Planning

As a frequent Strava user myself, I was a little skeptical of Facebook leaking into my riding & training feeds. But with content restricted to Clubs you are a member of and athletes that you choose to follow, it could make Strava a much more powerful tool for organizing rides, planning trips & sharing training tools. There is certainly a lot of potential to add relevant social content and interaction in the activity feed. My advice though, whether quoting Voltaire or Marvel is… “With great power comes great responsibility”. And I’m pretty sure that anyone who clogs my feed will quickly get an ‘Unfollow’. As one Club already has today.

Strava Posts, active life sharing in your activity feed How to Post

If you regularly use Strava, all you need to do is log in to see the new format. Or update your mobile app. But if you want to dig deeper & see how to Post on your own, head over to Strava’s blog for more details.

Shifting software that originally intended to be a record keeping tool first and a social environment second into a social environment first and a record keeping tool somewhere down the list of priorities is going to be a rough switch. Right now, the switch is not user friendly because it is irreversible. You can have any organization of your feed as long as it is Strava’s organization of your feed. Why wouldn’t they keep the option at least to organize your feed by chronology? Because that is what most people who use the site as a ride log would do – data likes to be organized chronologically. However, that’s not Strava’s goal, and probably also not the sort of use that would make Strava more valuable. Social media is everything, and for me, personally I am sick of it.

This is why I suspended my paid Strava subscription and moved my money to TrainingPeaks. If I’m paying for something like this, the focus needs to be on how I can become a better cyclist and that’s where the development needs to be focused. Making Strava more social and Facebook like takes it further from something that will grow me as an athlete.

Exactly; strava’s Mobile app is terrible for all but the most rudimentary data analysis whereas TrainingPeaks is perfect example of how to create a powerful tool that is user friendly and quick to use when needed and in-depth when a rider has the time and not a laptop. Facebook is a superior platform; more cyclists have it and thus our team will continue to use that and TeamSnap to communicate training rides and public events.

@Johnny, It may take them further away from something that will grow you as a athlete, but takes them closer to lining their pockets with that Facebook buyout money!

@TheKaiser it’s all about priorities, right?

my card expired and my strava premium lapsed. what i enjoyed most about strava was a feature they make kind of hard to find and don’t really promote as much as the social stuff… (Fitness and freshness map). i totally feel the same way, what am i paying for at the end of the day….. the strata benefits promo e-mails they have been sending out are a joke!

at the same time i feel TP if a little bit cheaper would be a no brainer! i love how it functions and the execution of train plans. it feels like a tool i could use to become more fit and honestly it has been.

@myke2241 I don’t know how much time you’ve spent with TP, but they have the same type of Fitness/Freshness chart (TSSd vs TSB or overall fitness chart). Initially I felt like you do where TP was over-priced, but as I’ve gotten in to it more and started to find all the things it does beyond Strava, I’ve come to decide it’s actually a good value (ATP, Workout Library, all the various charting, their blog, etc.). It has taken me some time to understand and start using it all, but now that I’m down that path, it is better and worth it.

I did see that and i thought the provide data was better as i could weigh those results weekly and see if training was consistent. ill probably make the switch to premium soon. i really do love the platform.

I’m just glad that ‘sponsored ads’ haven’t yet started to creep into the middle of my Strava feed……is that coming someday? Perhaps I should post this question on my Strava feed as a post (hahaha…kidding)

Suspending my Premium subscription also, this is not what I am looking for in a ride tracking app

Agree. I have decided the perks of Strava Premium are far outweighed by the perks of Trainingpeaks or Xert.

I was already leaning away from Strava and now this provides confirmation. I used Training Peaks this season with good success to prepare for Leadville and that’s where I’ll put my money going forward. The social aspect is exactly why I’m leaving and now this takes it to a new level. So long Strava!

Time line need to need to be chronological order. I’m using twitter and instagram less since they switched for chronological to “tuned for you” timelines

Have been a premium member for about 2 years. Initially, because I liked their power curve feature, and a few other analysis points. Now though, I can get almost all of that information from Garmin and Training Peaks, so the social stuff is kind of the last straw. Downgraded to free this morning.

Cancelled premium. Deleted the app and downloaded training peaks. Nice 5 year run. Good bye Strava.
