BB 386 EVO is one of those ‘standards’ that has been slow to take off, but enough manufacturers seem to be using it by now that bottom bracket makers have taken note. The key difference is the addition of bottom brackets specifically for 24mm or 24/22mm spindles like those used on standard Shimano or SRAM cranksets. Previously, most manufacturers simply made their bottom brackets to fit 30mm spindles and then offered reducer adapters to allow for the use of 24mm spindles.

But with enough frames running the standard and many riders wishing to run Shimano cranksets, or simply not upgrade to a 30mm spindle crankset, we’re seeing a few new options like the new bottom brackets from Wheels Manufacturing. EB17: Wheels Manufacturing adds 386EVO bottom brackets for 24mm spindles, T47 internal and external BBs

Fitted with angular contact bearings, there are two specific models – one for 24mm spindles (Shimano, or others), and one for 24/22mm spindles (SRAM. Using their threaded shell design, the two halves of the bottom bracket thread together in the center keeping everything tight and square in the BB shell. The design also allows for more space between the BB shell and the center of the bottom bracket which should be better for frames with internal cables or wires that run under the BB. Claimed weights run 133-145g, and each will be available later this fall for $99 each.

As an even more obscure ‘standard,’ T47 is struggling to gain acceptance, but that hasn’t stopped Wheels Manufacturing and others from offering bottom brackets for it. Their new T47-BB will be available in internal or external bearing designs and like the 386EVO BB above, will be offered in SRAM (24/22mm) or Shimano (24mm) specific fits. To be sold with angular contact bearings only, pricing is still TBD but you can expect to see these in about 2-3 weeks.

I wonder what would happen if these “problem solver” type companies stopped making adapters. It seems that they enable bored engineers at frame/bike companies to come up with what they think are novel solutions to non-existent problems; they drink overly-hopped IPAs at the company function, get together with their peers, and start drawing bullsh*t on napkins, bullsh*t that often ends up manifesting itself as yet another row on a compatibility chart.

Guys/Girls, make frames better; don’t try to come up with something just so you can get your name on a patent.

Frames would still be pressfit. This a tooling cost for bike brands effects the frame design more than anything else. Riders I talk to who either work on their bikes or have had to deal with creaks/frequent BB changes all seem to want a threaded interface; the only folks that tend to be a fan of pressfit systems are those who either lucked out and got a bike that was within tolerance and the BB interface performs as designed (my wife is very smug about this) or don’t really ride enough for this to be an issue and really think that the 100 gram weight savings of a PF system is going to really help them.

Or maybe they lube their chain and replace their bottom bracket regularly.

They are making frames better – for the manufacturer ( easier/simpler to make) and stock holders (lower cost).

I already bought one from Enduro bearings a year ago. They finally came out with this?

I bought one of those 386EVO bottom bracket that thread in the middle for my road bike, I choose the angular type bearings, so I had to pay an extra…
I returned the all thing as soon as it arrived, after I found that I needed a special tool, and that it was not included… What a crap.

It’s a $14 tool and the Wheels PF-30 threaded BB finally silenced my Super Six Evo after dealing with near constant creaking for 2 years.

Wheels Mfg already state that you need their wrenches for their thread-together bottom brackets. I don’t see why this is their fault. More like your fault for overlooking it.
