If you’re looking to carry more than a bit of cargo on your bike, there are many options to make it happen. Do you buy a whole new cargo bike, or simply add storage to your bicycle with bags, racks, or a trailer? The creators of the TReGo want to give you another option altogether: How about converting your favorite bike into a cargo bike?
The TReGO Trolley resembles a dolly (or hand truck) and replaces your front wheel with a carrying platform that rides on two smaller wheels. The tilting wheels make sure the TReGo handles well, and once detached the trolley can be used by hand. With an adapter kit the TReGo can also be towed behind the bike, and there’s a child carrier already in the works too.
After 4 years of development, the TReGo recently went live on Kickstarter and is already getting a lot of support…
The TReGo will connect to almost any bicycle with a QR front axle and 26” wheels or larger. Suspension forks are fine, but bikes with carbon forks, thru-axles, or Fat Bikes are not compatible. The trolley can accommodate up to 40lbs of weight on the aluminum front rack, or 88lbs when in cart mode.
The TReGo rolls on two 16” wheels, with a hydraulic disk brake on each. Since the brake lever (which squeezes both brakes) is connected to the trolley, you have to install a secondary mount on your bars and use the TReGo’s lever to stop, leaving your existing front lever dangling in redundancy. The trolley’s lever slips out of a QR clamp on the TReGo and into the clamp on your handlebars. When parked, the rider can lock the front wheels with a button on the brake lever.
The trolley’s tilting wheels allow you to lean into corners naturally, and the promo video shows that it can handle some unpaved terrain. The handles adjust telescopically to tuck under your bike’s handlebars while riding and extend for hand use.
The TReGo’s proprietary Fast Connector replaces your front axle and requires a special screwdriver (which is provided) to remove, so vandals won’t run off with it. With the Fast Connector installed, the trolley itself only takes a few seconds to remove or re-attach. With the flip of a lever, the Fast Connector clamps the TReGo’s rubber cones to the back of your fork legs. After removing the trolley, the connector flips down and acts as a front kickstand.
For hauling heavier loads, TReGo offers an Aluminum Cart Kit. This kit includes a rear axle adapter and an aluminum cargo box so you can lay the trolley flat and tow it behind you. The box measures 29 x 16.5 x 4”.
There’s also an optional TReGo cargo bag that sits on the front rack and holds 40L of stuff. Since they’re made from upcycled reclaimed billboards, each bag will be unique in appearance. The cargo bags have a shoulder strap for off-bike use, and reflective detailing. The TReGo’s creators are already working on a child stroller that attaches to the trolley (in front mode), but it’s not ready quite yet.
After the campaign, supporters will be able to choose between five colors for their front or cart trays- red, blue, white, grey and black. The best prices have already been grabbed up, but Kickstarter supporters can currently pre-order a TReGo trolley with aluminum rack for $700 USD (full retail will be $1260).
