First it was Android Wear, and now it’s Apple Watch getting the untethered ride tracking through Strava. iOS users can update the app to the latest version and, if you’ve got the Apple Watch Series 2, it’ll push the update to your wrist and let you track your rides using only the watch…no iPhone needed.

From the press release: “Athletes can now take full advantage of the watch’s GPS capabilities by recording their time, pace, distance, speed and heart rate without their iOS device. Apple Watch Series 2 joins more than 100 other GPS devices that work seamlessly with Strava.”

What about cadence? It’s got a motion sensor so why not use it?

If you strap the watch to your ankle maybe.

Cadence can come from your wrists as well. My Wahoo chest strap even does it, for running or cycling. I’d be interested in this as an alternative that can replace all the other gadgets for my runs.

So it does Strava and HR with no phone now. I’m actually interested in one for the mtb then.

So will the watch HR work with a Garmin 520? I’m assuming you can then listen to music on it while you ride?

And you can text? But not talk?

Now if only it would work with ANT+ devices….

My question is can the phone tell the difference between riding and walking? My iPhone thinks I walked really, really far this weekend

I am one of the (deleted) that has an Apple Iwatch 1. Is this app not functional with it?
