If you look at products that take bearings, the three items that most often find their way into boutique brands’ catalogs are hubs, bottom brackets and headsets. The latter has been a glaring omission from White Industries’ spread…until now. This gold external cup headset pic was snapped by California Travis, and Alec White was coy about their intentions for it. What we could surmise from a few cryptic messages were that you might see it on Adam Sklar’s bikes at NAHBS, you might see it on a couple other small builders’ bikes at NAHBS, and it might or might not be something they are developing for future production. And you might be able to spot more pictures of such things on other builders’ Instagram accounts between now at NAHBS. Or, in Alec’s words, “Maybe someone could think that might be what is possibly going on.”

I am not sure who is in the market for a straight tapered headset anymore – but looks it’s gold!

I hope they’re using better bearings for these than their hubs. I love their hubs. The bearings suck though…great for maybe 5,000 miles, then they’re super crunchy. Replace them with good bearings and you’re good for 15,000 or more miles!!!

I second Veganpotter’s remark. I get even less than 5,000 miles out of mine, and I have two wheelsets built with CLD hubs. Love the hub, but not the oem bearings.

Flawlessly for TWO years? Not a big deal for a headset. Only a really really crappy headset won’t last 2 years. I’ve got 90,000 miles on a King headset without issue. Ha, can’t say that about the junk King hubs I’ve owned.

Its nice to not need it. Are you gonna buy a spare to use for the two weeks it takes to get it replaced? Then remove the spare and press in the replacement when I comes in?

If I had that headset on my desk, which I’m not allowed to say I do, I would say it’s pretty amazing how light they got it. I could say it’s a full 35 grams lighter than another headset sitting on my desk if I was allowed to say that, but I’m not going to. Could be partly because of the alloy topcap bolt that I couldn’t say exists on this headset I’m not allowed to talk about. They MIGHT also be making a sweet tapered headset, but even if I knew that, I wouldn’t be allowed to say it, so I’m not saying that either. I guess I’m not saying anything, huh? Haha.

Such a good thing you didn’t say that, then.

Can you say what the other headset you have on your desk is? Or perhaps explain why you do, or perhaps do not, have such a variety of headsets on your desk?

I suspect someone is about to have their desk taken away. If that someone even had a desk in the first place which is entirely suspect.
