We reported on Velotooler a few months back just before they launched their ‘hire a mechanic’ service. If you missed it, they offer an online service that brings mechanics and riders together in addition to tracking service records and more. They’ve since addressed some earlier concerns from mechanics, and launched an ios app. Furthermore, they’re going beyond the online service to help bring competitive cycling to the New England area.

Get all the details past the break…

Some mechanics had worries about insurance coverage prior to the launch. Initially, anyone interested in servicing bikes under the Velotooler name had to buy their own insurance. It was the only cost for those looking to join the mechanic team, that is if you owned all the required tools. They’ve since agreed to a group insurance policy that mechanics can opt into, rather than purchasing their own. Those that opt into the policy can expect an additional 2% bump in service fees. It’s a simple way to have protection with little relative cost.

Their mobile app launched late last year for iOS devices. It provides all the online features in a mobile friendly design, more so than just the mobile version in Safari or Chrome. Riders can filter repair requirements and options such as mechanic skill level, cost, day/time, and distance. They can also manage their bike profiles and other settings. There’s also a chat area where both parties can communicate before performing the service which should help mechanics diagnose any other issues.

The entire team has a history of being heavily invested in racing and leisurely riding. So it’s only natural they support the industry they cater to by introducing the Velotooler Cup. They’re aiding in the development of 6 road events around New England this spring. Registration for the Marblehead Massachusetts race has already started on the VeloTooler Cup site.

There’s still more to come as Velotooler continues to develop their system. They have plans to offer their service in Canada and Europe. Hopefully we’ll see an app launch on Google Play in the coming months.

Maybe they should focus on the US before expanding. I couldn’t find any mechanics in Boston or New York
