If you’re tired of the same old flavors of energy food, CLIF might have a solution. Adding to an expansive list of products and flavors, CLIF will soon be offering three new flavors of their BLOKS energy chews. While this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Salted Watermelon, the addition of Ginger Ale and Spearmint flavors certainly caught our attention. Ginger is known to calm upset stomachs, so perhaps a non-carbonated form of ginger ale in an energy chew might have a similar effect thanks to the use of actual ginger oil. In a similar but different approach, the Spearmint flavor is said to be inspired by recent research that has shown daily intake of peppermint oil may improve athletic performance. Though the Spearmint BLOKS contain spearmint oil rather than peppermint, even if they don’t increase performance on account of the mint, they’ll at least keep you going with carbs, and electrolytes…

Joining the current eight flavors, CLIF will soon have 11 flavors of BLOKS which all use 95% organic ingredients. Depending on the flavor, caffeine is included at 25mg or 50mg or not at all, and there are three levels of sodium – 50mg, 100mg, and 150mg as found in the new Salted Watermelon and current Margarita flavors. Each Blok contains 33 calories, with six BLOKS per package for easy fueling during race day. All of the new flavors will maintain the same $2.79 retail price in single package or can be purchased in boxes of 18.

In addition to the CLIF Builder’s protein bars, the company has introduced a new protein bar that utilizes whey protein instead of the soy protein of the Builder’s. The Whey Protein Bars have 14g of protein and 5g of sugar without any sugar alcohols or GMO ingredients. Available in Salted Caramel Cashew, Peanut Butter & Chocolate, and Coconut Almond Chocolate and sell for $1,79 each.

Last but not least, is a new CLIF Bar flavor that according to my wife is the best one yet. Before I even knew about it, she said she had found a new CLIF Bar and it was her new favorite – which happens to be the new Peanut Butter Banana with Dark Chocolate bar. Packed with 10g of protein and 4g of fiber, the new flavor joins other CLIF Bars for $1.79 each.

I used to try to get Kenny Sousa ( Clif rep and an incredible Bi/ Triathlete) to request a spearmint flavored gel years ago, thought that would be an awesome flavor, but that was before the Clif Blocks. Im definitely interested in giving them a try. The Ginger ale flavor sounds interesting also.

I was going to accuse Gu of shamelessly ripping off the Clif Blok packaging, but it turns out those packs have 8 pieces, while Clif has 6. Totally different concept.

Flavors:

Yuck
Gross
Gag!

I’m totally fine with my lemon limes…I’m not eating these things as snacks, just getting them down during a ride, and the simpler the flavor, the better.

Might as well pack twizzlers given the amount of sugar in those things. I will stick with Crank Sports e-Gels.
