The 700 Bike Backstreet Smart Bike starts with a Reynolds chromoly steel frameset that’s uniquely shaped and adds an integrated OLED screen on the stem to map and monitor your ride. Keeping the lines simple is a single-speed looking setup, using a PFBB30 with eccentric bottom bracket to keep chain tension. But, it’s hiding a SRAM Automatic 2-speed internally geared hub shifts for you based on effort, so you’re not stuck grinding up the hills or spinning feverishly on the descents.

The rear end uses an “H” stay, which they say smooths vibrations and bumps. The V-brakes are mounted behind their usual spots on both the fork and rear end, which cleans up the looks a bit. Check their website for other nifty details to the design.

The BBF Urban 3.1 has a fast, stealthy look thanks to its matte black paint scheme and thin fenders.

Like so many other commuter bikes, it uses an internally geared hub to minimize maintenance. Most European countries require bicycles to have lights, which often times mean they ship with really cheap, crappy plastic ones in the box. This one comes with a dynamo powered, high output model with the wire cleverly hidden inside the fork leg.

Bruno comes from Japan and offers several full size and several smaller wheeled bikes. This one’s the Mixte F, shown with optional rear rack and basket. It has a chromoly frame, twist shifter and a finished weight (without basket) of about 22.7lb.

popal-dutch-basic-youth-urban-commuter-bicycle01

The Popal Daily Dutch Basic is a kid friendly 24″ city bike with integrated LED lights, racks and lock; front V-brake and Nexus rear hub. Besides the fantastically overdone look and feel of the bike, a real bonus is the €299 price point.

c29-front-cargo-cruiser-urban-commuter-bicycle01

The C29 is a front-loading cargo bike that’s built for speed, something hinted at by its bruiser looks. It has an alloy frame with chromoly front kickstand able to keep it upright even when fully loaded with its max 50kg (110lb) capacity. It uses a 29er rear wheel with 24″ front, both wrapped in Schwalbe Big Apple tires. An integrated “billboard” lets you turn it into a mobile business. All builds come with hydraulic disc brakes, choose from SRAM Automatix 2-speed or Shimano Alfine 8-speed rear hubs.

checker-pig-urban-commuter-bicycle01

Checker Pig’s new Paul (and Paula) lifestyle bikes get chromoly frames with chromed accent parts, rims, and cockpit for a classically modern look. Front and rear lights are optional, but it comes with matching leather saddle and grips.

Tyler-
Am I seeing that correctly? Is that really a shaft drive w/ an internal hub?
Sweet holy grail of awesome although included w/ buckets of friction.
I want one but it’ll only be a bit before it’s requested in ano red w/ boost and a lefty rigid fork.

Shaft internal drive for a townie.
Maybe the perfect answer.

Nike Biketown bicycles use them. Very heavy, and about 20% efficiency loss after both. But they are about as maintenance-free as you can get.
