In what may be a bid to get Santa into some off-season road training, Fi’zi:k has gotten a bit flashier with their premier men’s road shoe the R1B. Introduced more than a year ago, the R1B had stuck to a conservative color palette with its fairly unique asymmetric tongue and zig-zag BOA dial closure that is claimed to fit a wider range of foot volumes. But while the addition of a bright Red option will certainly suit some riders’ tastes, what is probably more helpful is a new wider range of sizes, with much bigger shoes now available in all colors, although the size range does seem to vary across different colors…

The $400/350€ R1B Uomo is built around the new upper that Fizik calls Volume Control, where the zipping front dial adjusts the shape of the shoe all the way down to the toe for fine fit control whether you have small or large volume feet.

When the claimed 235g carbon-soled shoes were first debuted there was no talk about sizing, but when we got an update just this fall it seemed that they would be limited to a rather small 37 to 42 spread with half sizes plus a 43. We thought that curious for a shoe that isn’t even offered in the women’s Donna side of things, but Fizik seems to have corrected the issue now.

The new red with black trim joins its opposite version black/red to get the most broad size range for the R1B going all the way from 37-47 with half sizes and an extra 48 on top of that. The single color white or black shoes get a trimmed down range without the smaller sizes from 40-47 with halves, plus the 48. Get them through Fizik direct or your local dealer.

These are sweet! Now if they would just offer them in a version suitable for Cross I’d be in.

For the same price (US$400), I can get the lighter Specialized S-Works 6 Roads. Of course, these are more boutique-y, esoteric, and makes me seem like a better rider while sitting at the coffee shop, but my money’s going to function first.

Umm, I don’t know about you guys but sizes larger than 42 have been available from way back. A mate has been riding a pair of 47s since last winter, bought normally through the LBS.
