EB16: ENVE updates road disc brake forks, shows ’em off on beautiful custom bikes

2017 ENVE disc brake fork updated with 12mm thru axles and flat mount brakes

ENVE’s new disc brake road fork updates to the 12mm thru axle and flat mount brake standards, and opens up to make room for 32mm tires.

They went away from the externally routed brake hose and clip for a cleaner, more streamlined appearance that also lines things up better for the switch to flat mount brakes. Internal channels guide the brake hose directly thru the fork for easy installs. Axle to crown grew 3mm to 370mm, which was necessary to increase tire clearance capacity even though the crown got thinner. The legs are more shapely, a little deeper at the top so they could be narrower (more arero) and makes them a bit stiffer. More details and lots of pretty bikes below…

Specs include:

  • 1-1/8″ to 1-1/4″ taper only
  • 43 and 50 mm rakes
  • 300g
  • $TBD

November ship date on the regular 12mm thru axle version. It’ll also be available with the new Mavic Speed Release thru axle system, which is one of the best quick release thru axles we’ve seen yet.

Compared to the original (left), the new version is sleeker with more shapely legs.

300 grams for the new RD Disc fork? Really? That would be a dramatic reduction in weight compared to the current version and a stunning weigth for a disc compatible fork.

Sharp-looking fork. Cable routing looks slick.

Both the weight and axle to crown measurements seem like they could be typos though?

Flat-mount and internal hose routing are steps back IMHO. Flat Mount does not allow for 180 mm rotors which I run on my Enve RD Disc fork. And the internal routing makes the perfect bleed a little harder to achieve on those Shimano calipers which like to be turned upside down and shaken during bleeding in order to really bring all air bubbles out. The solution for external routing which Enve had found was just perfect. I can’t see any improvement in the internal solution not even from an aesthetic point of view.

It sounds silly, but the external routing was one of the reasons I didn’t buy a disc road bike last year. I just didn’t want a cable attached to the fork with something that seemed like a fancy zip tie. This looks much nicer to me.

The cable routing on the fork looks partially implemented to me and that’ll snag on the headset in a crash.

Wouldn’t a more complete solution be to also run the cable through the headset like we used to in the 1980’s on our BMXs (hollow bolt headset) and through the internals of the fork leg? Entering via the top of the fork leg looks inelegant to me.

I don’t think that would work well with a dropbar setup, with the brake hose exiting Under The Handlebar and curving around to enter the top cap seems like a lot of exposed housing. I think they got it right given the intended use. I’d buy it if I could afford it.

It just seems to me that through the top cap routing would be more complicated than Donald Trump comb-over.

Give it 5 years, but I’m guessing that big (S? or T?) manufactures will begin to take advantage of the fact that hydraulic systems don’t need elegant cable paths and will build integrated hydraulic lines from the shifter to the lower fork legs that never see the outside of the handlebar, stem, frame or fork. Combined with wireless shifting and you have the cleanest cockpit possible (just in time to fill up the handlebars with more cameras, computers and lights. :/)
