Multi-tools have been around for quite some time now, and nearly every cyclist has one of these handy devices in their pack or tool box. However, they always seem to include one or two bits that you could live without, and others that you might have substituted in given the choice. If your multi-tool is carrying extra weight or lacking something essential, you’ll be glad to hear the UK’s Atelier Cycles has decided to offer fully customizable multi-tools as their debut product.

The idea for the customizable multi-tool was hatched after company founder Nelson Trees participated in last year’s Transcontinental Race, an unsupported single stage race stretching from Belgium to Istanbul. After he couldn’t find an existing tool with all the functions and bits he desired, he decided to combine his love for long distance cycling with his past experience in design and material sourcing. Trees then founded Atelier Cycles and got to work on making his custom multi-tool a reality…

Atelier’s concept allows buyers to visit the company’s website and choose exactly which tools or bits they want. Each multi-tool will be built-to-order, and despite the customizable options the prices are reasonable.

There are two basic options- The minimalist package includes your choice of up to 10 tools from Atelier’s catalogue, and comes with a black neoprene carrying sleeve. This package starts at $28 USD, and you’ll have to buck up $3 more if you include a chain breaker.

The deluxe package sells for $43 and buyers can choose any number of tools from Atelier’s available range, right up to ‘one of everything, please’. The deluxe tools come with a two part black silicone case that completely covers and protects the multi-tool.

Your options for tools and bits include: Hex keys (2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8mm), Torx keys (T10, T25, T27 or T30), Phillips or flathead screwdrivers, and a chain breaker tool that features integrated spoke wrenches for 3.22 and 3.45mm nipples plus one for Mavic nipples.

A pair of tire levers is also available as the company’s first accessory offering (which counts as one tool if you order a minimalist package). The plastic levers clip snugly into the multi-tool for convenient transport.

The multi-tools’ side plates are made from forged and machined 7075 aluminum. The plates are hard anodized in five different color options- silver, purple, red, blue, and black. All bits are made from forged and CNC’d chrome vanadium steel (except the stainless steel chain breaker), and are chrome plated for further durability. Their dimensions are shown below.

Suppliers are already lined up for the individual parts and the standard tool samples have been produced. The company just needs funding to invest in tooling to produce the chain breaker tool and side plates.

Atelier Cycles’ Kickstarter campaign runs until June 8th. If funding is attained the first units should be sent out by October. Shipping charges of roughly $7 within the UK and $15 for international customers will apply. Check out the campaign here, or visit Atelier’s website for further information.

This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Spent an hour making an inventory of all the bolts I might want to adjust on my bike for an upcoming cross-state ride and couldn’t find a tool with a closely matching set: either way too many or missing a few.

Looking at those allen/hex keys makes me question the quality; they look soft/rounded. No thank you.

companies need to have a 10mm allen option now. So many of the bb30 cranks need a 10mm

Multitools already exist where you could take out bits if you really didn’t want them. Also I’ve never seen chrome-y tools that are that nice, they are usually less precise.

You can do this on your own easily. I modified my Crank Bros tool several years ago. I purchased a cheap folding torx tool from Harbor Freight; removed the phillips and flat head drivers from the CB tool and replaced them with a T10, T15, and T20 and a few washers to even things out.
