Selle Royal sees the growth of people riding their bikes for urban transportation, and with that comes some growing pains. Living and locking our bikes up in they city often ends up with saddles suffering the consequences. Whether it is them getting stolen, vandalized, or just having to deal with harsh weather sitting outside on a bike rack, their new Ta+Too saddle aims to quickly solve those problems with a modular, removable top. When you add in the possibility to customize your saddle for a little individualism, the Ta+Too may be a nice solution for your city bike…

The Ta+Too concept is simple, take the saddle with you and its top will last longer and look better. Just pop the padded top in your bag, and let the rain, snow, and neighborhood miscreants do what they want to the durable plastic shell and base.

The saddle is made up of two basic parts: the plastic Base with its rubber sides and steel rails, and the Top with its 3D Skingel padding and synthetic leather cover. An optional Grip loop can be added on the back to give you an easy handle to move the bike around when you are on foot.

It only takes a few seconds to remove the top or reattach it: Just Slide the saddle top in from the back, lining up the front tabs; Twist the clip on the back to pull it down; then Lock it in place by pulling out the security key that lets the clip rotate.

The modular system lets riders customize the look for their own tastes, with hints that some cyclists may even end up with more than one saddle top if the system catches on. Currently the top comes with either black or white sides and a black, white, red, lime green, orange of blue perforated center section. The base is available in either black or white as well.

The saddle is available now and sells for 70€ including the base with chromoly rails and one removable top. Adding the rear handle loop adds on and additional 10€. The video above shows a weathered brown leather top, so we’re assuming that the colorful “Chrome” series available on Selle Royal’s site now, will get some expanded options in the future, maybe even with different shapes or levels of padding.

Pit lock your seat clamp/ post and use a plastic bag for weather protection. simpler than carrying around some weird rubber shaped object in your bag or coat pocket.

Wouldn’t the part left behind be susceptible to fouling, vandalism and weather?

Color me skeptical on this one. I see the latch mechanism getting damaged either on the bike side or the saddle side and then having to buy replacement parts, or perhaps a latch failing and causing half my saddle to be left in the street as I ride away in traffic. I would also expect the latch mechanism to wear and become loose/rattle eventually. Maybe they’ve thought of all that and designed accordingly, but having never had a conventional saddle lost or stolen, and knowing no one else who has, I just don’t see the need for this feature even if it works flawlessly. I’m sure someone else will think it’s just what the doctor ordered, though. People are like that.

Clearly the bike can still be ridden with the top of the saddle removed, it only looks mildly uncomfortable for the few minutes that the bike thief needs to get away.

Make this in combination with the shot gun thing and I’m in.

Terrible idea. The top half of the saddle will easily slide off or rip off.
