Pic-of-the-Day_Eva-Siva_eTap-update

About a month back we had a photo submitted by Eva Siva of Bratislava with her SRAM eTap upgrade on a titanium road bike from Lynskey. As they sometimes do, discussions in the comments picked at the details, and the first thing they picked out were the vestigial downtube cable stops resulting from the wireless swap. Like many of the other commenters, Siva was amused by the “grumps” as she called them, so decided to send us a photo reply to please everyone, especially Roborbob.

We always love to see your photos and would like to show them to the world here on the Pic Of The Day. Send in your photo with a brief description here.

Good work Eva.

I’m about to put eTap on my ti Merlin, so will be left with ‘Shrek ears’ also. Using the cable stops to collect roadside flowers is a masterpiece in aesthetic re-purposing. I might even have to start wearing red nail-varnish too 😉

Anyone notice the matching red valve extenders? Nice!! And any idea what bar-tape she is using that reveals a rainbow of colors popping through the perforations?

it’s the Cinelli Caleido. They have a white too – it looks great but it can be a bear to wrap well, no stretch in the center but very stretchy on the edges.

May flowers. Nice touch. Two thumbshifters up from me. I need to get out and ride to shake the “grumps.” Pic of the day is an appreciated motivator.

Except for retrofitting old frames, I don’t see the point in etap. The shifting lag is horrendous. Everytime my customers try it alongqide di2/eps they end up buying a di2 or eps drivetrain.

How bad is the lag? Is it shifting lag (i.e. the usual SRAM lag) or signal lag between movement of the shifter and derailleur?

They can build a 10-50 MTB cassette, but eTap only supports 11-28.

You got the usual SRAM lag, which is fine by me. But you also got a signal lag between the shifting movement and the derailleur. All for one reason and one reason only – it’s because Sram went wireless. A wireless drivetrain needs more power than a fly-by-wire. The shifter has to wake up from the sleeping mode before sending the shifting signal to the derailleur.

Don’t get me wrong I think it’s good to offer electronic drivetrain to old bikes, but I’d rather drill my old Colnago master and fit a di2/eps rather than using the current version of e-tap. To be honest our e-tap buyers never tried eps nor di2, the only thing they could think of was “wireless means better than fly-by-wire”. I custom build between 5 and 10 eps/di2 bikes per week so I know a thing or two about it. And for me the lag is a NO GO. I got no problem selling it though hahaha.
