After providing a way to keep your bike’s components safe, the next logical step for Pinhead was to move into frame locks. After all, it does you no good to have each component secured if someone can take the whole bike. More than just wanting to offer a frame lock, Pinhead wanted it to be light, and to be simple to use. That meant integrating the same style key cylinder that’s found in their total bike protection kits. One key, full bike security, and all in a surprisingly light package…

At just 660g, the Pinhead frame lock is certainly a light weight. Stressing that it is a medium security lock, this isn’t something to leave your bike overnight in NYC, but it should be more than enough for many locales.

The lock makes use of the same Pinhead key that can be used to secure your seat post, head set, and wheels. To make it more theft resistant the lock has a shroud around the lock cylinder which the key slips underneath. Built with an integrated lock bracket, the lock can be transported inside the front triangle or on other parts of the frame. Available now, the locks will retail for $75.

Wheel security has come a long way – as long as you have a bike with quick releases or bolt on axles. Thru axles still remain vunerable which is exactly why Pinhead (and other brands) are working on the issue as quickly as possible. Pinhead says their security option for thru axles will be available in 2-3 months and will be offered in sizes to fit the most popular styles. Of course it will use the same lock style as the rest of the Pinhead line making it possible for a full single key system.

Does that lock just have a Bolt and a security hut? Seems like it would be kind of a slow locking process.

That hinge doesn’t look so secure.

The ‘key’ looks more like a tool. Do all keys work with every u-lock? If so, this could be the single key answer to the 4 locks I have scattered around town. That is, until a thief buys a pinhead lock of their own.

From Pinhead’s website:

“Our locks use a special coded key that comes with each lockset. Each key is different and comes with an engraved nine-digit code so it can be replaced if lost, and matching locksets can ordered.”

Love their components.

Re: thru axles – I’d love to see a thru-axle design that would accomodate rack/fender fittings.
