This year at Frostbike, issi unveiled two new pedal platforms that are sure to please both dealers and consumers. At this point we’ve had the chance to try out a few different issi models with almost nothing but positive remarks. The pedal company may have been created to give dealers another option to sell in their shops, but the result is a catalog of pedals that do a great job of blending value and performance.

First spotted at Biketoberfest, issi finally ready to make their new road pedal official, along with their Flip clips/platform for commuters…

Rather than reinventing the pedal, the issi Road uses a proven shape with a wide pedal body and Keo cleat compatibility.

Like the cleats we’ve seen from VP, the issi Road cleats use a clever two piece interlocking design. When it comes time to replace your cleats, rather than try to draw around them with a Sharpie, the two piece design allows you to replace one pice at a time for the perfect position. Available soon, issi Road will be offered in 8 colors for $100.

Specs (from issi):

  • Bushing and sealed cartridge bearing for durability
  • ED-coated Chromoly spindle resists corrosion
  • Simple installation with a 8mm hex key
  • 50mm spindle length
  • Stainless Steel cleat plate provides a solid pedal interface
  • Adjustable spring tension
  • 0, 4.5, or 7° cleat float with 3-bolt split-cleat system

Showing just how much development they put into certain pedals, issi gave us a peek at a few of the 3D printed models that were used to develop the new Flip. QBP is slowly starting to do more and more in house, and their 3D printer is capable of putting out some fairly large mock ups – something that we can’t show you just yet (which has nothing to do with issi).

The idea behind the Flip is simple. As issi brand manager Chris Duerkop puts it, the Flip is a pedal “for clip ins or clogs.” One side features an SPD style clipless mechanism, the other a cast aluminum platform with built in traction pins. Eventually the Flip will be sold in a Flip 1 and Flip 2, but the 2 comes first this April for $75.

Specs (from issi):

  • Flip I: 52.5mm spindle length
  • Flip II: 56.5mm spindle length
  • Chromoly spindle, ED-coated
  • Standard 15mm wrench flats as well as 8mm hex broach
  • Black chrome hardware
  • Adjustable spring tension
  • 4º cleat float

If they had a dollar for every time someone said “ISIS makes pedals?” they’d be millionaires.

They look so generic, but I hear they’re killing it where Shimano has left LBS’s high and dry with their newer distribution methods.

I tried Shimano’s PD-A530 pedal with the clips on one side and “alloy platform” on the other and they were slick as snot on the platform side.

Hopefully these issi pedals have better traction in the platform side.

The iSSi pedals are a godsend. Great margins, fast cheap delivery, sealed bearings throughout and completely serviceable. (Please don’t ever make me put the jaws back together again… but it can be done)
