Maple Bacon

Lately it seems the only thing nearly as trendy as bacon is hating on the growing popularity of crispy pork belly. But before you get up in arms about yet another bacon product – relax, this one’s vegan. Continuing with their revised product line of energy gels, GU’s decision to remove Histidine from the formula has rendered the product completely plant based. No, the Maple Bacon flavor doesn’t have any actual bacon in it, but like the rest of the GU energy gels we imagine it is delicious. Inside you’ll find 100 calories of Maple-ly Bacon-y energy with 450mg of Amino Acids, 60mg of Sodium, and 20mg of Caffeine. Info that’s just as easy to digest as the gel thanks to their new informative packaging.

Considering fall is just around the corner, GU’s new flavors for Roctane Energy Gel and their Energy Chews should be a big hit as well…

Vanilla Spice Roctane Salted Caramel Apple Chews

Short of riding by your local coffee shop, the GU Vanilla Spice Roctane provides the best way to get your latte fix on your ride. The latest in a line of coffee beverage flavored gels, Vanilla Spice packs in Roctane’s 1425mg of Amino Acids, 125mg of Sodium, and 35mg of caffeine for a pick me up in a packet. As a reminder, even though the Histadine has been removed from Roctane products, they are still not vegan friendly. On the Energy Chew side of things, familiar fall favorites come in the form of the new Salted Caramel Apple Chews. Now with a smaller serving and 90 calories per packet for less waste, Energy Chews (formerly Chomps) provide 450mg of Amino Acids, 100mg of Sodium, and 20mg of Caffeine.

Pricing will remain the same as other GU products with the Energy Gels selling for $11.60 (8) or $34.80 (24), the Roctane Energy Gels for $60 (24), and the Energy Chews are priced at $30 (24).

I’m waiting for the Beef Stroganoff flavor.

Their Roctane = $36.30 per pound/?pint?. Does anyone else find that ludicrous.

Come on Vegan Salmon flavor!

@Turner92, yes, I would completely agree and really don’t think there’s much difference to justify the difference in price. Basicly if I can’t get it for $1 a gel, I’m not buying it.

Their root beer gels are all kinds of awesome.

For all the Canadian bikers out there… MAPLE BACON! That should just come in a Canadian flag wrapper.

Can’t think of anything better sitting in the back of my mouth, mixed in with the heat and sweat and that gooy spit goo that ya get, than the taste of bacon and maple…

Why don’t they apply this flavor technology to adult products like cough syrup

Roy

Haha! No kidding FACTORY! Rarely do I need cough syrup, but part of the reason is the terrible taste. Personally I have no idea how riders deal with trying to choke down a load of gu and have it running down the back of their throats when barely able to breathe. F’that. I’d rather have a couple bottles of liquid drinks full or sugar if under the stress of racing or a bag of trail mix with M&Ms for fun rides..gels make me gag…maybe it IS the price

(deleted). If you chose to be vegan, you don’t get bacon, you get lettuce. Make a real bacon gel for regular people and a rabbit food gel for vegans. Please.

Any chance we can get an update to the article adding the amount of carbohydrates in each product?

They should have a human flesh flavor variety. It would taste like bacon but better, just like in real life. Eddy Merckx could endorse it.

Absolutely not. The orgasmic flavor of bacon should in no way be associated with something with the consistency of snot.

It also tastes like maple syrup and nothing like bacon.

I don’t know about this. Like Antipodean_G says, that’s going to taste awful when you’re riding. I don’t like maple syrup on my bacon at the best of times anyway. Salty or sour stuff, though, I could probably go for that.

I have been getting bacon flavored energy bars for years at the pet food store.

Tried the Maple Bacon, Rootbeer and Salted Caramel versions for the first time last Saturday as I was racing “The Tushar Crusher” race in Beaver, UT. They were all delicious, but my favorites were Rootbeer and Maple Bacon. Sooooooo good (for a gel)!

I thought the root beer was a bit too sweet. It tasted exactly like the root beer flavored hard candies.

Vegan bacon? Not cool… I bet it’s not real maple, either.

I’ll be happy when people quit leaving the tops of these all over the trails.

I gave up on gels/blocks/energy bars more than a year ago and have not looked back. I carry a ziplock baggy with organic figs and/or dates and use some Enduralite fizz in my bladder/bottles. That’s it and it works great. On bigger days I’ll bring beef jerky and some chocolate. Plenty of flavor and energy and none of those god-forsaken packs littering the trails or anywhere else.

Why go with faux bacon when the real thing does the job?

Personally I find all the goo packs to be vile, vomit inducing gut bombs anyway. Real food works better.

If I had a buck for every empty gu sachet I’ve seen next to the trail I’d be a rich man. These guys need to man-up and make their sachets biodegradable.
